Under the supervision of the Bridge Operations Technologist, incumbents of this class perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in connection with bridge maintenance and repair, which does not require a tradesperson.
Position operates trucks with trailers and various powered mobile equipment. Work is often performed at heights, over water, or in confined spaces.As the
_Bridge Worker_
you will:
- Perform structural repairs, painting, cleaning, sandblasting, sealing, grouting, etc. on the structural steel, concrete and timber components of bridges and major culverts.
- Install and perform repairs on guardrails and roadside safety devices.
- Construct forming for concrete works.
- Place and finish concrete.
- Clean and paint highway structures.
- Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment such as jackhammers, chainsaws, concrete saws, pressure washers, generators, posthole augers and dewatering pumps.
- Install and perform repair and maintenance work on bridge railing, fencing, riprap, and asphalt.
- Work with chemicals such as silane concrete sealer & wearing surface epoxy.
- Clean and wash bridges, remove debris from culverts and bridge infrastructures.
- Set up worksite including scaffolding construction and dismantling, barricade & equipment locating and perform traffic control functions.
- Operate, clean and perform daily maintenance on vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, utility trucks, pickup trucks, skidsteer loader, etc.
- Transport materials, equipment, and workers as required.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Experience and knowledge in carpentry; not requiring a journeyman certificate.
- Experience in concrete forming for structural members.
- Experience in and knowledge of concrete placement and finishing.
- Experience in the use, operation and maintenance of sandblasting equipment.
- Experience in the maintenance and replacement of bridge expansion joint seals.
- Experience in the maintenance and replacement of timber bridge components.
- Knowledge of concrete forming practices.
- Ability to perform duties with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to work as part of a team and establish/maintain a positive, respectful, safe and healthy work environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and the general public.
- Completion of the following training:
- Flagging Traffic
- Traffic control & Signage
- WHMIS
- Fire Extinguisher Use
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- Must be able to stand and work on sloped/uneven terrain for long durations of shift.
- Must be able to work standby and overtime, as required.
- Physically fit to perform the duties of the position, including but not limited to:
- Lifting up to 75 lbs
- Fitting in and through confined spaces
- Operating and undertaking work from the underbridge crane, scaffolding, ladders, and pier tops
