Department of Biology, Faculty of Science


Purpose:


Under the direction of the Administrative Officer, the incumbent acts as the Building Director and oversees the building, infrastructures and safety matters related to the Biology Department in the Stewart Bio Building.

The incumbent oversees and supervises the biology receiving and common equipment used by the users in the department.

The incumbent is also responsible for a variety of administrative duties related to office/laboratory relocations, receiving area and equipment, small renovation projects within Biology and acting as a liaison between Biology, the Faculty of Science and various University services as well as external service providers.

This position is involved with the Stewart West wing renovations and reintegration as well as planning of North Wing renovations.


Major responsibilities:

  • Acts as the main point of contact for all building related matters in Stewart Bio Building, including attending various committee meetings (for instance, Incident command committees when emergencies arise). Represent the department at meetings related to West Wing and North Wing renovation projects.
  • Acts has a liaison between Biology, the Faculty of Science, and University services (Facility management, Building Services, Fire Prevention Office, Security Services).
  • Work with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Animal Compliance regarding compliance with building safety codes and animal care for research labs.
  • Assess optimal use of space and resources (such as furniture available). Allocate space as per priorities and needs. Troubleshoot onsite issues and resolve conflicts efficiently and effectively. Make recommendations and provide solutions as required.
  • Grant building access (Lenel and Keys), update and maintain key and card access databases.
  • Performs regular building inspections and organizes eye wash inspections. Plans regular asbestos monitoring and air quality control. Compile data. Update safety posters and maintain database of first aiders.
  • Reconcile recovery fees and approve orders for Biology receiving. Review and approves service contracts and renewal. Maintain budget.
  • Schedules repairs and service maintenance with external providers. Compile data for autoclave monitoring.
  • Circulate communiqués to Building listserves. Update listserves contacts.
  • Supervise technical staff
  • Act as an active member on the safety committee.

Other Qualifying Skills:

  • Knowledge of construction industry practices and procedures is essential, including Quebec Building Code.
  • Experience and knowledge of infrastructure needs and safety concerns, in a research environment.
  • Experience in Facilities Operations and Maintenance, building design, and/or project management.
  • Problem solving, negotiation and organizational skills.
  • Must be client focused with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Goaloriented, autonomous and a selfstarter requiring mínimal supervision. Strong analytical background and project planning skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure on multiple activities/projects, to meet client needs.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft office tools including Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat.
  • Bilingual (French & English), spoken & written. McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 on a scale of 04.
