    Description

    Position Overview

    Working within the Emergency team and the Mental Health Reassessment and Observation Unit (ROU-HSC), the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse brings mental health expertise to patient assessment, suicide risk evaluation, care planning, intervention, and outcome assessment within the Emergency Department, Mental Health Observation Unit, and the Facility. The role involves offering support and mental healthcare to Emergency Department (ED) patients and families facing stress or crisis. Additionally, the Psychiatric Liaison Nurse offers consultation and backing to patients primarily under the care of an ED nurse.

    Experience

    • Minimum of 3 years recent acute mental health experience needed.
    • Previous involvement in an Emergency Department is advantageous.
    • Proven skills in psychiatric evaluation within a biopsychosocial framework, crisis intervention, therapeutic communication, co-occurring disorders, and knowledge of community resources accessible to clients with psychosocial, psychiatric, and chemical dependency needs.

    Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

    • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing mandatory.
    • BScMH, BScPN, or BN background is a plus.

    Certification/Licensure/Registration

    • Enrollment with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) necessary.
    • Active engagement in professional associations like the Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) is desirable.
    • Adherence to the Professional Nursing Codes of Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses.

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Compliance with the Scope of practice as delineated in the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act for RPNs in Mental Health.
    • Adherence to the Scope of practice as described in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) for Registered Nurses.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in mental health clinical abilities.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent teaching skills and the capacity to work with clients and families to guide and instruct colleagues in delivering mental healthcare.
    • Ability to collaborate, lead a team, and independently provide mental healthcare.
    • Strong organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
    • Basic computer skills and proficiency in relevant Emergency Department computer systems.
