Position Description
The postdoc position is supervised by Dr. Xiaoting Li in the Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta.

The research project that the postdoc will participate in is a multimodal study of the directive system in Mandarin interaction.

The start date of this position is January 1, 2023. A slightly later start date in spring 2023 might be possible upon negotiation.

This is a 2-year position with the possibility for renewal. Salary is $50,000 CAD per annum.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in collecting language and social interactional data using audio
- and video-recording technologies.

  • Experience in analyzing authentic language and interactional data using qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies.
  • Expertise in one or more the following areas: conversation analysis, multimodal interaction analysis, interactional linguistics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience publishing in internationallyrecognized academic venues (e.g., peerreviewed journals).
  • Experience using cuttingedge video recording technologies such as mobile eyetracking glasses is an asset, but not mandatory.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) and strong interpersonal skills to work in a diverse team environment effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently and adaptability to work under the supervision of principal investigator with flexibility and willingness to learn new techniques as a selfstarter.
  • Excellent problemsolving and analytical skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management skills.
  • Supervision skills to supervise graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience in transcribing spoken Mandarin Chinese data.
