Position Summary:


This position is accountable to support inpatient Speech-Language Pathology (S-LP) services across the Credit Valley Hospital - Rehab/Subacute Geriatrics, Medicine, Oncology and Surgery.

For reporting purposes, the CDA will report to the manager of 1D as the most responsible manager as the largest portion of the position is within 1D rehab/subacute geriatrics unit.


  • Work with a large interprofessional team including but not limited to S-LP's, Physicians, other health professionals, clerical staff and volunteers
  • Provide direct treatment to patients after assessment and treatment programs have been designed by the supervising S-LP.
  • Document and report to S-LP regularly regarding patient progress, goals, change in performance and updates.
  • Conduct, without interpretation, speech and language screens.
  • Educate staff, family, clients and community.
  • Prepare and maintain therapy materials.
  • Manage SLP service supplies and materials. This includes checking inventory and ensuring sufficient supplies and materials are in working order for assessment and treatment.
  • Coordinate booking, transport and set up for videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS).
  • Conduct mealtime observations for diet tolerance and report findings to S-LP.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, team meetings and family conferences and reporting information to S-LP.
  • Assist S-LP in research projects, inservice training and family or community education.
  • Assist with departmental operations: data collection, record keeping, safety procedures, maintenance of supplies and equipment.
  • Attend staff meetings as required.
  • Ensure all hospital and departmental policies and procedures are followed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Ensure that duties stay within the scope of practice as outlined by CASLPO.

Qualifications:


Formal, minimum education required:


Undergraduate degree in a related field from an accredited institution, followed by a college level program as a Communication Disorders Assistant from an accredited institution.


Previous related or special experience necessary:
Previous experience working with adults with communication and swallowing impairments

Excellent organizational skills

Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal and written communication.

Demonstrated interest in ongoing professional development

Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary care team is an asset.
