The City of Edmonton is looking for a passionate professional to lead Compost School.

In this role you will learn the breadth and depth of Edmonton's waste system and how residents can reduce, reuse, and recycle.

You will oversee day-to-day operations of this interpretive site while engaging residents - virtual and in-person - about all aspects of composting and reducing food waste.


What will you be doing?

  • Oversee the daytoday operations and outreach of Compost School and compost demonstration sites
  • Engage visitors and passersby at Compost School or compost demonstration sites as well as public inquiries and help them with questions relating to home composting, city composting, and Edmonton's waste system
  • Develop and implement opportunities for residents to learn about home composting, city composting, and using compost
  • Ensure that workers at Compost School (volunteers, volunteer groups, and staff) have the appropriate supervision and training to work safely and effectively for their roles
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement learning opportunities, special events, workshops, and presentations on home composting and dealing with grass, leaves, plants, branches, food scraps, and other compostable items
  • Plan, coordinate, and organize information to ensure that Compost School fulfills its mission and mandate while cooperating with internal and external partners (e.g. Edmonton Native Plant Group, John Janzen Nature Centre)
  • Sustain ongoing partnerships in the community that support Compost School
  • Support continuous improvement of the home composting programs, including determining performance measures, collecting data, compiling reports, evaluating performance, and reporting on the facility

Qualifications:


  • University Degree in Education, Communication or a related discipline is required
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience in curriculum development, program evaluation or related areas of specialization

Assets:


  • Proven experience with implementing tools and tactics of communitybased social marketing or behaviour change techniques
  • Experience leading volunteers and/or volunteer programs
  • Completion of the Master Composter Recycler Program (training and volunteering)

Skills Required for Success:


  • Knowledge of educational principles, techniques and practices
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions of an advanced nature
  • Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, orally and in writing
  • Skill in preparing and presenting course information within a classroom setting
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kg and willing to work in adverse weather conditions

Conditions of Employment:


  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week. Evening and weekend availability may be required

The weekly hours for this position will be Tuesday to Saturday.

Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
