Position Summary


We are seeking a part-time Animal Care Attendant to oversee and ensure a high standard of day to day care is provided to our residents and boarding animals.

The chosen applicant will be responsible for a variety of tasks which include participating in rounds, hands-on animal care for a variety of animals including but not limited to: cats, dogs, goats, ducks, chicken, small animals.

Time management, record keeping, organization and initiative are essential aspects of this role. The chosen applicant must be able to work well independently and in group settings. The sanctuary is not located on a bus route, and the successful applicant must have access to reliable transportation.

Part-Time hrs/week with potential for more hours depending on volume of animals at the sanctuary

Every Monday and Friday 1-7pm, Wednesdays 3-7pm and 2-3 weekends/month.


Wage:
$17.50/hr


Start Date:
May 1st. Ability to start paid training sooner.


A typical day

  • Provide clean water and fresh food to animals daily, clean and disinfect all dishes, bedding and other items used by the animals. Clean and disinfect all cages and rooms within the boarding facilities following sanctuary policies.
  • Provide full clean and care of resident animals 23x weekly and as needed. Species include but are not limited to ducks, chickens, rabbits, quails, goats, cats and dogs.
  • Participate in caring for our PetSmart adoption center on Gordon Street in Guelph as well as other satellite partners in Guelph as required.
  • Ensure the health and behavioral needs of all animals in care are monitored and documented daily.
  • Ensure all animal care, infectious disease and facility cleaning protocols and policies are followed at all times by staff and volunteers.
  • Safely and properly handle and restrain various animals in care with fear free techniques.
  • Handle and interact with animals with severe aggression or behavioral challenges.
  • Administer general medical care including oral, topical and subcutaneous medications, vaccines, microchipping and bandage changing.
  • Work closely with our charity partner, Dorset Rescue Kittens, to facilitate transfers for adoption and assist with adoptions and animal care when needed.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations
  • Document behavioral, medical and other animal specific information to ShelterLuv and PetPoint shelter softwares.
  • Participate in the transfer of animals to vet clinics and other locations as required.
  • Outdoor work in allweather elements.
  • Communicate with members of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services regarding the animals in our care.
  • Assist with setting up our new facility onsite.
  • Assist with organizing and planning our new facility onsite.
  • Safely lift and transport up to 65lbs on a regular basis.

Key qualifications and experience

  • Post secondary education or experience in a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to safely and properly handle and restrain various animals in care.
  • Comfortable handling and interacting with animals who have aggression or behavioral challenges.
  • Experience with mentoring and leadership, as well as working closely with team members.
  • Ability to work in and maintain confidentiality in a professional setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and multitask in a highpaced, emotional environment.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license with reliable access to a vehicle for transportation to/from the shelter and for animal transportation.
  • Selfstarter and ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift and transport up to 65lbs on a regular basis.
  • Shelter experience is an asset.
