  • The Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) is a global aquatic research, data management, and partnership platform headquartered at Dalhousie University. OTN's mission is to inform the stewardship and sustainable management of aquatic animals by providing knowledge on their movements, habitats, and survival in the face of changing global environments. Since 2008, OTN has been deploying stateoftheart aquatic monitoring equipment in key ocean and inland waters around the world.

Job Summary

  • Reporting to the Field Manager, the Field Technician is a key part of ensuring the smooth operation of OTN's field program. The Field Technician will be responsible for assisting with the preparation, deployment, maintenance, and data retrieval of acoustic receivers and oceanographic monitoring equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare acoustic telemetry equipment, including receivers and releases, for underwater deployments.
  • Design mooring systems in accordance with regional conditions to ensure the safe and effective placement of receivers.
  • Participate in atsea field missions to deploy and retrieve equipment.
  • Retrieve data from acoustic receivers and upload to the OTN database. Work with the OTN data and project management teams to maintain uptodate reporting and inventory.
  • Refurbish equipment inhouse (e.g., battery replacement, removal of biofouling).
  • Prepare, pack, and ship equipment around the globe; liaise with Dalhousie's customs department to meet necessary shipping regulations.

Note

The position requires extended periods of travel (local, national, and international), and time spent in the field and at sea.

To meet operational requirements, evening and weekend work will be required.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.

Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in marine biology, oceanography, or related field, or equivalent advanced technical certification and 2 years experience with acoustic telemetry, tagging, oceanographic monitoring, or related area.
  • Understanding of acoustic technology and research, including study design, mission planning, and field operations.
  • Understanding of the interdisciplinary ocean research and management landscape.
  • Experience with spatial mapping programs, GPS technology, plotting coordinates, and navigation.
  • Comfortable working in an atsea environment in a wide variety of conditions.
  • Able to handle small boats, including inflatables.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and be willing to obtain a forklift license.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to liaise with a wide variety of stakeholders including fishermen, ship captains, researchers, and industry.
  • Strong problemsolving abilities with the ability to adapt and respond quickly to unforeseen challenges in a field environment.
  • Able to travel internationally.
  • Able to safely lift >30kg.
  • Must pass a Mariners Medical Examination.

Assets

  • Experience tagging aquatic species.
  • Knowledge of shipping dangerous goods internationally.
  • Experience operating and maintaining remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and side scan sonar.
  • Fluency in French or Spanish.
  • SVOP, MED-DVS, forklift training.
