The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the School of Mining & Petroleum Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate students some of the finest instruction and facilities in North America.

Position summary


Reporting to Professor AbouRizk, the Technical Writer plays a key role in the coordination and finalization of communication materials produced on behalf of the staff and students associated with the trust holder's research program.


Duties

  • Provides highlevel editing and formatting for academic journal, conference submissions, theses and other materials.
  • Assists in preparing annual reports for the University, NSERC, or industrial partners.
  • Coordinates the content, design and production of targeted communications tools, including online and social media content, newsletters, brochures, posters, presentations, and other information, promotional materials and stakeholder documents
  • Quickly assesses the writing style necessary for each project and easily transitions from one style to another.
  • Works in a collaborative environment where consultation with the Chair staff and graduate students determines the guiding principles for each writing project.
  • Researches and writes materials that raise awareness and the profile of the Chair.
  • Provides individual and group writing instruction and tutorials as necessary.
  • Exercises resourcefulness; Independently initiates research to find a solution.
  • Liaises with other communications staff within department, faculty, the university, Chair's partner organizations, and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains Chair website, including writing content/material for new pages, updating existing ones as required, ensuring that information is current and accurate.
  • Communicates with printers and publishers as necessary

Minimum Qualifications

  • A diploma or certificate in English, business communications, public relations, journalism, or a related discipline—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 years' experience with technical writing
  • Experience in desktop publishing softwarepreferably Adobe lnDesignis mandatory.
  • Must be familiar with a variety of style guides (e.g., Chicago, APA. CP).
  • Experience with social media tools and web content management systems.
