Manitoba Environment and Climate is looking for a skilled technician to join a team in the delivery of programs to protect and manage groundwater in Manitoba.
Protecting the quality and quantity of groundwater is a focus area in the new provincial water management strategy and this position will play an important role in delivering Manitoba's objectives under this focus area.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba class 5 driver's licence
- Must be willing and able to work overtime when required
- Must be willing and able travel and work in varying weather conditions with overnight stays
- Must be able to lift and carry 23 kgs (50 lbs)
Qualifications:
Essential:
- Post secondary degree in geology, environmental studies, resource or ecosystem management or a diploma in water resources or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience collecting groundwater samples.
- Experience compiling and analysing groundwater information, including water quality and reporting the results.
- Experience conducting test hole drilling, logging samples, installing monitoring wells and groundwater monitoring.
- Knowledge of geology, hydrogeologic principles, and water wells.
- Proficient data management and analysis skills including the use of MS excel and databases.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Effective written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
- Organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and prioritze workloads.
Desired:
- Familiarity with workplace health and safety and standard operating procedures.
- Experience creating maps (preferably using GIS software) and creating well logs and cross sections.
Duties:
The Aquifer Technologist will provide office and field technical support for the management, protection, supply and quality of groundwater in Manitoba.
The position is responsible for the monitoring and sampling of provincial observation wells, conducting private well surveys, and inventorying wells.
The position compiles, reviews, prepares and analyzes data in support of projects and programs that lead to effective groundwater management and protection.
