Are you looking to

  • Support a variety of specialized project areas including aquatic studies, habitat assessments, fish health studies, aquatic effects assessments supporting risk assessments, and/or remediation techniques in aquatic habitats

As a
Intermediate Aquatic Scientist, you will join our
Calgary, Alberta office as part of our Natural Sciences team. Other western office locations will also be considered.

The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of projects with responsibilities as follows:


  • Oversee complex biological investigations, specifically aquatic effects assessments (e.g., benthic invertebrate and aquatic ecology projects)
  • Contribute to a growing and collaborative team of biologists and aquatic scientists
  • Provide advice to internal and external clients related to complex aquatic environmental monitoring strategy, aquatic monitoring in streams and waterbodies affected by contaminated sites and industrial impacts, aquatic effects assessments, and Ecological Risk Assessments
  • Actively participate in maintaining Matrix's strong safety culture

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or related field
  • Eligible for professional designation in a relevant organization (i.e. P. Biol., P. Ag., etc.)
  • 710 years of consulting experience related to aquatics
  • Familiarity with pertinent regulatory guidelines (e.g., Environmental Quality Guidelines for Alberta Surface Water, Canadian Water Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life.)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the environmental assessment process in Alberta (Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act) and Canada (Impact Assessment Act) as related to effects on aquatic environments
  • Abilities in the areas of aquatic study design, field sampling protocols, statistical analysis and report preparation and review
  • Experience in summarizing and manipulating field and laboratory datasets and other environmental information
  • Project management skills including developing and monitoring of budgets, project scoping and scheduling, organizational skills; field logistics and reporting
  • Possess strong attention to detail as well as good organizational skills
  • Excellent written communication and technical report writing abilities
  • Ability to provide mentorship to junior staff and participate in their development
  • Experience managing client relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines on integrated assessments
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver's license with no driving restrictions
  • Strong safety mindset and demonstrated safety leadership
