The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights.

It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region.

Purpose of position


The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world.

The Accounting Coordinator - Accounts Payable will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.


Reporting to the Manager, Finance, the Accounting Coordinator - Accounts Payable is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day accounting operations of the Museum, including ensuring that expenses are supported, recorded and approved and that invoices are paid and expense reports are settled.


The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.


Key Responsibilities

  • Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models antiracist and accountable behaviours.
  • Supports the procurement process and monitors requisitions, approvals, coding, and payments including but not limited to:
  • Review all purchase requisitions to ensure proper completion, including correct financial coding.
  • Resolve purchase order to invoice discrepancies.
  • Review invoices to ensure appropriate taxes are recorded and paid.
  • Ensure invoices are properly received by the shipper/receiver and approved for payment by appropriate levels of authority prior to payment.
  • Review employee expense reports and credit card reports on line ensuring appropriate preapprovals were obtained and financial coding is accurate.
  • Process all vendor/employee payments via cheques, wires and EFTs on a weekly basis.
  • Completes regular accounting, reconciliation and reporting including:
  • Accounting journal entries and those related to: bank entries, payroll, financial coding reclasses, inventory and cost of sales;
  • Reconciliation of the Accounts Payable subledger;
  • Completion of travel and hospitality reports that are posted on the CMHR website;
  • Reconciliation of inventory between the Financial Management System and the Boutique pointofsales system (evaluate different sources of information and reconcile conflicting or ambiguous data).
  • Provides training/guidance to various CMHR staff on general financial procedures, including but not limited to purchase requisitions, expense report completion, invoicing and cheque requests.
  • Provides backup to the Account ing Coordinator, Revenue to manage the cash floats, complete bank deposits and record all sales.
  • Performs administrative duties including filing and scanning documents.
  • Participates in process improvement initiatives including system implementation testing as required;
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Postsecondary education in Accounting (or related) or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of three (3) years' experience in an accounting department, including fullcycle accounting and accounts payable functions
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all
  • Knowledge of accrual accounting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Programs, specifically with Microsoft Excel (Intermediate Level)
  • E xperience working with an integrated accounting system
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical ability and problemsolving skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities and assignments in order to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a teamoriented environment

  • Working knowledge of Retail Sales Tax (Manitoba) and GST
