Position


The University of Alberta's Sustainability Council is looking for current University of Alberta students (undergraduate or graduate) to join our team as part-time Sustainability Interns for This competition will be used to fill multiple positions.


Based on the job responsibilities, this internship position would be well-suited for students taking no more than 3 or 4 courses per semester.


Under the supervision of Sustainability Council staff, the interns will be responsible for spearheading the data collection for University of Alberta's submission for key sustainability rankings; coordinating and delivering events; and carrying out project-based, communications, and logístical work.

The exact portfolio and work plan of the interns will depend on the intern skill sets and programming needs of the Sustainability Council.

We are doing this by growing a vibrant community engaged in interdisciplinary teaching, learning, research and active citizenship at the University of Alberta.

We host speaking events and conferences, develop and promote curricular programs, support research, provide opportunities for student leadership, and try to spark interest in sustainability issues.

We seek to provide our interns with real-world, meaningful experience that builds relevant qualifications for future careers in sustainability.

As a result, interns will gain valuable experience in public/stakeholder engagement, event planning, project management, program evaluation, team leadership, marketing and communications, and research.


Work hours:


If successful, you will work 12 to 15 hours/week for the entire term of employment, with the exception of the winter break.

The majority of work will be scheduled Monday to Friday, within the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional opportunities for evening or weekend shifts. We are currently working in a hybrid model, with some in-office days and some work-from-home days. We are flexible on the exact hours and work location, except for staff meetings and office hours.

You will have an in-office work station and the breakdown between in-office/at-home days will be determined upon hire, based on your schedule and programming needs.


Duties

Reporting and Rankings

  • Support the University of Alberta's submission to: the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (THE IR), and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS)
  • Review and analyze data from previous submissions to learn about format and depth of content
  • Create a work plan based on overarching timelines and submission deadlines
  • Collect and effectively organize data from academic, administrative, and operational sources at the University of Alberta. This includes conducting independent research and identifying information sources
  • Share progress and discuss strategy in regular team meetings
  • Carry out reporting and wrapup

Engagement and Events

  • Assist in the planning, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of Sustainability Council events, which could include but are not limited to: Sustainable Development Goals Week, Foundations Summit for Sustainability and Leadership, Campus Sustainability Leaders Awards, Lecture Series, International Week Keynote, Week of Welcome/Orientation, and Open House.
  • Map out program milestones and progression based on overall timelines/deadlines
  • Identify and recruit relevant speakers for lecturebased events
  • Plan and execute engagement strategy, including resources and peoplepower
  • Deliver events with intern/volunteer support
  • Coordinate all event logistics and program administrative components
  • Plan and/or support promotions (e.g. postering, public speaking, working and coordinating an outreach table, delivering presentations, preparing materials, event wrapup, and networking)
  • Lead volunteers during events, promotional activities, and other programming (e.g. scheduling, training, and mentoring)
  • Represent the Sustainability Council and promote its programs at events

Programming and Communications Support

  • Assist the SC Staff with projectbased work (e.g. research, coordinating project elements, presentation prep, etc)
  • Where suitable, assist the Marketing & Communications support staff (e.g. writing blog posts, social media posts, and website content; photography and videography; supporting final inperson/online events for programs, etc)
