Empire Life is looking for a Privacy Compliance Specialist where you will be working as part of a dynamic compliance team to provide regulatory and risk management advice in support of the Company's Privacy Program.

As the Privacy Compliance Specialist you will play a key role in championing and establishing privacy-by-design principles and best practices, reporting to the Director, Regulatory Compliance Management.


What you'll be working on:


  • Provide privacy expertise and guidance to lines of businesses on privacy legislation to assist business areas in meeting requirements.
  • Conduct all necessary research to provide guidance and support to business areas on risk reviews and make appropriate recommendations for privacy by design to manage privacy risk.
  • Assist in communicating and advising on new privacy legislation and identify business areas and processes impacted by new requirements to ensure they are reviewed and included in the Company's privacy program and business area processes.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments ("PIA") for new initiatives / revised programs, assessing privacy related risk and controls and working with business areas, including senior management, to ensure they implement sufficient controls to manage privacy risk
  • Complete periodic reviews of PIAs to track implementation of controls as required.
  • Perform an ongoing review of monitoring and oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with privacy requirements and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop privacy training and tools as privacy reference resources for the Company.
  • Assist in the development of privacy program metrics.

What you'll need to have:


  • Minimum 5 years experience in data protection and privacy preferably in the financial services industry with experience in compliance, audit or risk management
  • Completion of a relevant university degree such as law, business, information management
  • Expert knowledge of Canadian Privacy law or GDPR
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software
  • Knowledge of information classification and handling practices
  • Experience analyzing, designing or monitoring controls
  • Understanding of data security and information technology practices for the processing and storage of personal information
  • Research, analytical, problem solving and decisionmaking skills
  • Project management and organizational skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to communicate effectively with and provide direction to management and employees at every levels
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders and business units

It would be nice for you to have:

  • Privacy designation/certificate such as Certified Information Privacy Professionals (CIPP)
  • FLMI, or AIRC
  • French language/bilingualism
