Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a teaching laboratory. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Maintains equipment.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the daytoday operations of a teaching laboratory. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Confers with professors concerning the scope and objectives of teaching laboratory sessions.
  • Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Designs or fabricates specialized equipment as required. Oversees setup of equipment and demonstrations. Oversees equipment loans.
  • Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
  • Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
  • Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, electrophoresis apparatus, electrophysiological recording apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers and audiovisual equipment.
  • Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material. Ensures timed purchase of perishables and live specimens. Arranges for permits for restricted specimens.
  • Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Reviews existing experiments. Performs literature searches; reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Tests, evaluates and participates in devising new methodology and experiments.
  • Prepares and updates laboratory manuals and handbooks; coordinates the production and distribution of these documents.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
  • Maintains records and files.
  • Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks within field of expertise

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:


Demonstrated knowledge of Chemistry in general (Analytical, Physical and Organic) and strong knowledge of best laboratory practices and safety regulations (chemical storage, waste management).

Experience working in a laboratory including preparing solutions and executing procedures required for analytical measurements, setting up workstations, preparing the necessary material and washing equipment.

Prior experience with GCMS, LCMS and the most common analytical techniques. Experience working with students, an asset. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to take initiative, excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Problem-solving abilities, as well as being able to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on instruments and laboratory equipment. Demonstrated ability to carry and move instruments. Knowledge of French and English.
