    Forensic Psychiatrist - Acute Care/Assessment

    The Forensic Services at Alberta Hospital Edmonton are the largest in the province, providing services primarily to Edmonton and Northern Alberta, but also extending assistance to other areas including NWT.

    A full-time position is available focusing on acute care and assessment of inpatients remanded by the court. Responsibilities include treating offenders requiring inpatient psychiatric care, conducting court-ordered assessments for fitness to stand trial and criminal responsibility, as well as providing care for patients under the Criminal Code Review Board (CCRB). The role entails completing court assessments and CCRB reports at a subspecialist level in forensic psychiatry and testifying when necessary.

    The position allows for involvement in correctional psychiatry at provincial or federal institutions and requires providing services at the Forensic Assessment and Community Services (FACS) clinic. While primarily inpatient-based, there are opportunities to participate in Mental Health Court assessments and at the AX clinic for rapid fitness assessments.

    • Qualifications:
    • MD with subspecialty training in Forensic Psychiatry
    • Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians of Canada required
    • Residency in forensic psychiatry completion
    • Eligibility for the Certification of Special Competence in Forensic Psychiatry
    • Salary/Benefits: Remuneration on a fee-for-service basis
