We are looking for a passionate HR Advisor to join our team


Reporting to the VP, Human Resources, the HR Advisor will travel to stores across Ontario providing HR support to Tokyo Smoke retail operations.

This position will provide consultation and guidance to the Regional Managers, Store Managers and Educators; acting as a local point of contact for HR matters and Training and Development initiatives for the store locations.

The HR Advisor will also report to the Toronto office and work in tandem with the existing HR team.

This role will focus heavily on _employee relations_ at the store level, helping to support a population of 600+ employees as well as building out the HR department.


Core Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support Tokyo Smoke leaders and store owners with HR functional areas, with a keen focus on employee relations and recruitment.
  • Acts as a single point of contact for your sector, providing HR expertise for company business leaders, Tokyo Smoke store managers and staff.
  • Experienced and comfortable working in a startup environment
  • Relevant experience in HR process and policy building
  • Collaborates with Edmonton HR team to execute HR processes and associated activities, as required.
  • Align Tokyo Smoke practices and employee relations strategies with Employment Standards in the best interest of the company.
  • Partner with other HR Advisor and HR team members to ensure HR strategies and approaches are aligned.
  • Proactively and consistently partner with Managers on employee relations and performance management issues, in concert with the other HR team members, to administer proactive communication/ programs etc. that ensure compliance with employment and labour relations legislation.
  • Assists the Tokyo Smoke leadership teams with interpreting and advising employees and managers regarding employment policy and procedures.
  • Conducts thorough, effective and objective conversations, meetings, interviews, and investigations related to violations of company policy, employment laws and employee complaints.
  • Supports Health and Safety and T&D strategies and initiatives for all Tokyo Smoke stores.
  • Utilize independent judgement and professional expertise in recommending resolutions.
  • Assist Store and Regional Managers to identify areas of growth and or improvement in staff and support Managers to train and develop the employees accordingly.
  • Works closely with HR Coordinator during the launching of new Tokyo Smoke location on all HR elements.
  • Provides onboarding execution for new hires, transfers and promotions including background checks, paperwork, and policy acknowledgement.
  • Responsible for maintaining all related HR metrics (recruitment, termination, leave of absence, vacation).
  • Support all Diversity initiatives within Tokyo Smoke.
  • Responsible for developing, implementing and managing Tokyo Smoke employee engagement initiatives.

Education, Experience and Skills:


  • 35 years of _progressive_ HR experience, preferably in a retail, though not required.
  • Minimum 2 years experience providing _Employee Relations_ guidance and support.
  • Postsecondary Diploma or Degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Criminal Background Check required.
  • Solid understanding of applicable employment and human rights legislation (e.g. Employment Standards Act, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and the Human Rights Code)
  • Proven ability to act as the single point of contact for Human Resources.
  • Solid experience in driving positive employee relations, to include strong problem solving.
  • Experience with parttime and fulltime employees in a retail or comparable environment is considered an asset.
  • Works independently yet is a strong HR team player.
  • Experience within a dynamic environment: building, implementing and strategizing HR processes and procedures.
  • Experience working with collective agreements considered an asset, not required though.
  • Experience and understanding of confidential information handling and storage.
  • Highly selfmotivated, with an ability to prioritize and work well under pressure.
  • Customerfocused attitude, with high level of professionalism and discretion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong level of influence and negotiation skills.
  • Advanced computer skills including experience with HRIS and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to adapt to change in job duties.
