Out-of-Scope

Work Location:
Toronto - This role is eligible for hybrid work.

You'll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office (in Toronto), on a scheduled rotation once training requirements have been met.

Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.

General Accountability


This role differs from that of a legal assistant in that law clerks are independently able to provide support to Counsel with respect to substantive legal drafting and file management.

Key Accountabilities

Litigation and Legal Document Support- Independently prepares standard draft Statements of Claim, Statements of Defense, Affidavits of Documents, and Motion Records.- Prepares summaries of productions.- Assists with collection and summary of undertakings.- Assists counsel in trial and discovery preparation, including organizing, scheduling of witnesses, and taking witness statements.- Gathers and refers file material to opposing counsel as requested/directed.- Prepares content for internal training seminars put on by counsel as required.


Research and Precedent Management- Assists in coordinating and maintaining both legal precedents and legal opinions prepared by the Legal department.- Assesses and summarizes medical information, wage loss information, lists documents, chronology of medical history, wage loss history, and list of special damages as required by Counsel.- Arranges independent medical examinations and organizes the necessary medical documents for such examination.

- Assists counsel in preparation of
- _ad hoc_ oral and written legal advice to internal business clients on an as needed basis.

Education and Experience- A two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Law Clerk Diploma years' of law clerk experience, in personal injury or insurance defense.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and procedures of Canadian insurance law.- Knowledge of industry standards relating to bodily injury and property insurance claims.- Knowledge of the functions and jurisdictions of local, provincial, and federal courts and agencies.- Knowledge of legal document formatting requirements.- Knowledge of litigation procedures and processes, including the Rules of Civil Procedure.- Skill in preparing standardized written material, including routine legal correspondence, pleadings memos and reports.
