Your role

  • As a Generalist, performs tasks required in the sound craft. Creative problem solving may be required to generate aural or visual outputs where requirements are clear. Work is generally performed according to accepted CBC or industry standards, but assignments require independent action, judgment and initiative as well as consultation with other programs, production or technical personnel. There is some requirement to coordinate the work of others.

Key Tasks:


  • Selects tools and ensures that facilities and materials are available to meet requirements. Arranges transportation of required tools and materials.
  • Suggests and devises special audio effects to meet program requirements and operates tools to produce such effects.
  • Evaluates recorded material to determine if it meets approved technical standards.
  • Ensures the proper operating condition of tools by making the necessary checks, adjustments and alignments according to standard procedures.
  • Contributes ideas and makes recommendations to overcome problems or achieve desired results.
  • Performs all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.
  • Survey locations and, in consultation with others, prepare plans for productions.
  • Operate and monitor automation systems.
  • Direct or effect the replacement and repair of facilities and equipment.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of other staff assigned to the preparation, setup, installation and operation of equipment.
  • Assist in the training of others.
  • In case of technical or program failure, make substitutions or adjustments as necessary to maintain continuous service. Report such failures.
  • Check for routing and availability of program material in accordance with schedules and established procedures. Advise responsible persons of any irregularities.
  • Ensure that program audio mixes achieve optimum aural results.
  • Ensure the reinforcement of sound to audiences and performers.
  • Set up and operate audio routing systems.
  • Record and play back sound effects and maintain a collection of recorded sound effects.
  • Undertake audio pickup operations, obtaining optimum audio quality.
  • Audio work includes specializing in wireless equipment setup, operation and assisting in radio frequency coordination.
  • Work often is done during longer hours, weekends and often with travel. Audio work by nature may include short bursts of louder audio levels if working on a studio floor, stage or side stage during music or sports shoots.
  • Assisting as part of an audio crew with AWP or lift certification is also required

Education Required:


  • Requires good knowledge and understanding of television and radio program production methods including sound, picture, lighting and staging craft functions, as well as how these crafts interact with the production clients. Knowledge generally gained through community college graduation in Radio or Television arts courses, or equivalent industry experience.

Experience Required:


  • Oneyear related experience.
  • Must have experience working on intercom headset for the entire show. Independent setup for music, sports, awards shows and the ability to also work as part of a TV crew is essential. The broadcast audio tech is required to often coordinate the work of others, either by preparing patch notes or assisting with plant functionals. This includes technical knowledge of control room, studio, atrium and CER connectivity.
  • Must have experience in live environments including sports arenas, crowds for live shows or music events. Submixing feeds for a Production Audio Mixer is also a component.
  • Strong English level, French is an asset,
  • Setup and troubleshooting skills must include RTS intercom with the ability to modify live templates and adjust panel programming, mic, IFB and comm wireless equipment, commentator booths.
