  • We are seeking a mature and responsible individual to join our team in the role of Custodian for the Maintenance and ShelterCare programs. This individual will work primarily weekday, daytime hours, cleaning and maintaining 190 Weber St. for House of Friendship programs and staff.
- **This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week), permanent, salaried position with paid sick time, personal days and vacation; group health benefits and defined contribution pension plan.

  • G class driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle required.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check may also may required.
  • Custodial experience will be considered an asset.*
  • Key Responsibilities:
  • To clean common areas, office spaces, staff spaces, and group spaces
  • To complete minor maintenance tasks as needed
  • To complete some cleaning and maintenance tasks external to the buildings
  • To complete laundry as required (resident bedding and towels)
  • To interact with staff and participants as needed, in a professional and respectful manner
  • To seek support from supervisor as needed to problem solve situations and respond appropriately to feedback
  • Contact supervisor with any health and safety or role concerns
  • To work collaboratively with all staff to ensure clean and safe environments for staff and participants
  • Solve issues and take initiative to ensure that respective sites are safe, in good working order, cleaned and disinfected regularly

Job Specific Knowledge/Skills:

  • Be aware of and assist in maintain a healthy and safe working environment
  • Experience with cleaning and basic maintenance skills
  • Physically able to clean, lift, carry, reach, shovel snow and safely use a step ladder across all of the required working hours
  • Ability to accept and respond appropriately to feedback
  • Ability to respond to the changing needs of the sites
  • Ability to prioritize needs and be flexible to accommodate changes
  • Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
  • Ability to interact professionally and courteously with individuals who may be using substances, in withdrawal from substances and/or experiencing challenges with mental health
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, various income levels, and sensitivity to their needs
  • Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude
  • Excellent time management and planning skills
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with cleaning and simple maintenance tasks

Critical Skills:

  • Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
  • Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required
  • Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
  • Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs
  • Experience with and commitment to using an antiracism, antioppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery

Rate of Pay:

  • Note: most new team members will start somewhere between the start rate and the mid point of the range.
  • Grade: 3
  • Min: $18.13
  • Mid: $20.59
  • Max: $23.05Working Conditions:
  • 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, daytime hours
  • Some flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the program
  • Requires the completion of physical tasks throughout the day and all week
  • Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected
  • Required to assess situations
