Our External Relations Department is seeking an Intergovernment Relations Specialist who will help advance Metro Vancouver's priorities with other orders of government and key stakeholders.

You are:

able to use your communications and interpersonal skills to maintain and develop relationships with representatives from other orders of government (federal, provincial, municipal).

Your research and writing skills are applied to analyzing policies, programs and funding opportunities from the federal and provincial governments that impact Metro Vancouver.



This role:


  • Identifies opportunities, designs, develops and implements a range of intergovernment relations strategies in support of strategic corporate goals and proactively identifies and pursues opportunities for grant funding from other orders of government.
  • Prepares materials for meetings with senior government officials, including briefing notes, speaking notes and presentations.
  • Leads the formulating and implementing of intergovernment relations strategies and develops tools and methods for evaluating the success of these strategies, monitors impact and makes recommendations for changes.
  • Provides intergovernment relations advice to senior management relating to strategic objectives.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and presentations including audiovisual and webbased communications using Power Point, desktop publishing, print and electronic production methods for producing materials.
  • Supports planning for events such as national or international forums, trade shows and networking events, that highlight corporate programs to achieve intergovernmental relations objectives.
  • Works collaboratively in a teambased, integrated communication style and liaises with senior level internal and external contacts nationwide, municipal partners, the public and media.
  • Performs related work as required.

To be successful, you have:


  • University graduation, with a degree in political science, communications or public relations, plus five to seven years of communications experience working with senior officials on intergovernment relations to advance strategic corporate goals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques relating to intergovernment relations campaigns, development, implementation and monitoring, especially as it relates to governmental agencies and organizations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the objectives of the Board, MVRD and its member municipalities as they relate to the work performed.
  • Considerable knowledge of writing techniques, social media, web, digital communications, PowerPoint, and outreach event planning.
  • Considerable initiative, political sensitivity and judgment.
  • Ability to take a project from concept through implementation and assessment in a public sector environment.
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan and implement intergovernment relations campaigns, communication projects and events.
  • Ability to research, develop and defend project proposals, analyze and evaluate data, and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts and to represent Metro Vancouver in a variety of committees and working groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to multitask and quickly adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to perform work with mínimal supervision.
  • Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
