Job Summary:

The Network and Server Technician performs technical and analytic work relating to the investigation, configuration, implementation and post-implementation review of the VPL network and servers and associated infrastructure.

This position configures, installs, supports, monitors and maintains the Library's local staff, public and wifi networks. Data, voice, video, and wireless network services are dependent on these networks.

This position works with internal VPL teams and the City of Vancouver Network team to establish/install new services and connectivity to new locations/sites and will work with Senior Network Specialist to complete needs assessments including the network equipment requirements.


Work is performed under supervision, with some independent judgement and action exercised in the analytical and technical aspects of the work.

The more complex work or issues are carried out under the guidance of the Senior Network Specialist or Manager.

This position has access to highly sensitive and business critical data from all Library departments.


Job Requirements:


Education/Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent training and experience related to the work
  • Current Cisco Certification (CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE or equivalent) is an asset

Experience:


  • Three years related data network experience, at least one in an enterprise environment
  • Cisco switch and router troubleshooting and installation experience
  • Experience in analyzing and resolving network and server hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Considerable knowledge of network and communications hardware such as switches, routers and firewalls.
  • Considerable knowledge of backup techniques and technologies including disk and tape.
  • Considerable knowledge of server operations, including virtualization, storage management, OS licensing, server resource management.
  • Knowledge of network, server and storage monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Thorough working knowledge of office productivity tools (e.g. Windows, MS Office, MS Project, Visio etc.) Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to problemsolve.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve network and server hardware and software problems in a timely
- and accurate manner.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with users, staff and vendors and service technicians.
  • Ability to work with technical and nontechnical staff.
  • Ability to prepare reports in clear and nontechnical language.
  • Capable of handling confidential, business critical and sensitive information in a position of trust.
  • Ability to use hardware support tools for maintaining and installing equipment.
  • A current and valid Class 5 BC driver's license is required.
  • An Enhanced Reliability Check security clearance is a requirement of this position.

$43.82 to $51.78 per hour

Work Schedule:
Monday to Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm on-site shifts, occasionally scheduled mornings, evening, or weekend work.
