About the role


Reporting locally to the General Manager and remotely to the Chief Science Officer and serving as an integral member of the Auxly Leamington team, the Product Development Scientist of Flower Products will be responsible for developing a robust innovation pipeline of flower products for Auxly.

Working with a world class operational team in an ultramodern automated greenhouse, the Product Development Scientist will support data driven decision at each stage of the flower product development cycle including:

selecting new strains with screen favourable traits both from external and inhouse genetic libraries, developing and optimizing new strains in table trials to build a robust process to understand what properties ultimately drive success when moved to commercial production, optimizing post-processing techniques including trimming, drying and curing to increase flower quality and yield, and supporting bulk and finish pack decisions to make sure flower quality is maximized for the consumer.

The Product Development Scientist of Flower Product's work is expected to deliver a robust innovation pipeline of flower differentiated products that will lead to increased sales of flower in both the B2B and B2C channels.


What can you expect to do?

  • Embody Auxly's business mission, and strategy and act in a responsible, ethical, and honest behaviour while consistently leading by example.
  • Working with Auxly Leamington's heads of cultivation, quality, and operations, develop a robust innovation pipeline of flower products.
  • Defining data criteria and utilizing datadriven decisions at each stage of the cultivation and flower cycle to increase quality, consistency, and differentiation.
  • Developing, designing, testing and reporting of experiments for new cultivars, and in turn evaluating different grow strategies to ensure optimum traits and performance.
  • Select new strains with desirable traits such as metabolite profiles (cannabinoids and terpene), bud structure and yield both from working with a network of external vendors and through development of Auxly's genetic library.
  • Develop strategies to maximize transfer of results achieved in table trials to that obtained during scale up production in the green house.
  • Optimize processing techniques such as defoliation, flushing, harvesting, trimming, drying, and curing to maximize flower quality and yield.
  • Supporting bulk and finish pack decisions to maximize flower quality all the way through its journey to the consumer.
  • Collaborate with external vendors to identify new opportunities and technologies to improve product quality and performance.
  • Utilize the Auxly sensory program under the R&D licences to evaluate flower product concepts to better define what flower traits are delighting the consumer.
  • Ensure cannabis industry trends are embodied in Auxly flower innovation pipeline.
  • Review and discuss conclusions with the Auxly management regarding progress of work and effectively communicate information to peers and management in the form of presentations and reports as required.
  • Utilize all available resources to identify problems and be proactive in the implementation of solutions.
  • Use the scientific method and experimentation to determine the best techniques for achieving the desired results.
  • Assist in the maintenance of inventory and ordering for the laboratory chemicals and consumables.
  • Motivate, train and mentor peers and junior staff as required.
  • Ensure that product development timelines are met and that projects are completed within your budget.
  • Collaborate with other team members and organization members to facilitate knowledge exchange, meet departmental and corporate goals.
  • Ensure compliance with and work within external and internal guidelines (e.g., SOP's, GMP, HSE).
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

What we're looking for

  • A Graduate degree in plant science, plant genetics, cannabis science, or a related field.
  • 5 years experience in product development within the cannabis industry considered an asset.
  • Considerable experience working in a regulated environment with a preference to individuals with cannabis industry experience.
  • Knowledge of techniques for plant selection, growth, harvest, postprocessing, and packaging for cannabis.
