Position Summary_


As a member of the Operations Department, the Facility Operator is responsible for the daily activities required to run, maintain, and service the facility and its events.

Events can include hockey games, concerts, banquets, basketball games, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities_


Following detailed instructions from the Supervisor, the Facility Operator must always conduct themselves in a manner that upholds health and safety regulations, ensuring events will run as safely and efficiently as possible.


  • Performance of ice maintenance, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Edging & chipping the perimeter of the ice surface;
  • Measuring ice depths, and flooding or shaving the ice as determined by the measurements taken.
  • Building maintenance, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Light structural or plumbing repairs;
  • General duties such as lighting changes, HVAC filter changes, litter pick up, etc.
  • Grounds maintenance, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Litter pick-up during opening procedures;
  • Checking both bridges for any debris or obstructions (or snow in winter).
  • Snow removal during winter season using either snowplow or shovel, throwing salt on walkways when required.
  • Custodial duties, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Emptying garbage/recycling bins when required;
  • Attending to any leak or spill calls.
  • Prepare the event level as determined by concert/event requirements: house curtains, hospitality room, etc.
  • Perform building opening procedures, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Refrigeration Plant and Mechanical Room inspections;
  • Ice maintenance;
  • Perform building closing procedures, which can include but is not limited to:
  • Ice maintenance;
  • Locking all exterior doors, setting the alarm, etc.
  • Assisting in facility security, and ensuring procedures are followed in the event of an emergency situation.
  • Assisting in the safe and effective Conversion from one event to the next (see Conversion Crew Job Description).
  • Assist with special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience_

While any experience in facility operations (especially in a supervisory role) is considered an asset, the Operator must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) and the following:

  • A valid Ontario "G Class" driver's licence. A driver's abstract may be required;
  • Basic computer skills, including an understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.);
  • Experience using ice resurfacing machines and relevant ice maintenance experience;
  • The ability to work safely around, and with, power equipment, including tools and machinery;
  • The ability to work at heights, such as ladders and walkways. Working from Heights training is an asset;
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously;
  • An ability to work in a fastpaced environment, with timesensitive deadlines;
  • An ability to take and follow written and/or verbal direction;
  • An ability to work well in a team environment, as well as independently with mínimal supervision;
  • The flexibility to work a varied schedule which will include days, evenings, and weekends;
  • An understanding and a respect of general Health & Safety practices, as well as the Meridian Centre's H&S Policy.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands_


The physical demands described here are representative, not all-inclusive, of those that the Facility Operator will encounter as they successfully perform the essential functions of this job.


  • This position requires the employee to work inside and outside the building in all types of climate and weather.
  • The use of close vision is required for review of information on a PC monitor, as well as hard copy output.
  • There is not a set schedule for this department. Hours are casual and based on the number and type of events.
  • The hours are varied and can include day, evening, and weekend shifts.
  • The employee is regularly required to walk for long periods of time.
  • The employee is required to stand, lift, kneel, and bend for periods of time.
  • The employee may be required to climb, work at heights, walk along high walkways, and/or balance;
  • The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • The employee is required to follow WHMIS practices and guidelines as well as provincial Health and Safety regulations at all times.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times where required:
  • The employee must provide their own CSA approved steel toe safety shoes/boots, and they must be worn at all times during every shift;
  • Work gloves must be worn at all times where hand protection is deemed necessary. The employee must provide their own work gloves.
  • A reflective vest must be worn at all times when working outside. Vests are provided to the employee by Meridian Centre.
