Job Description Summary

Provides editorial support to the Media Relations, Communications portfolio by maintaining media relations resources and media monitoring.

Serves as first-point-of contact for local, national and international media and others making inquiries to Media Relations; provides support for the units with promotional materials and newsletters, including capturing media stories and maintaining Media Relations archives, among other duties.

This role also provides support to the Internal Communications team.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Senior Media Strategist.

Work Performed

  • Media monitoring: captures and archives UBC media hits and distributes them to appropriate team members or UBC units. Tracks and summarizes media mentions.
  • Assist with graphics for digital communications projects under the guidance of a member of the media relations team including design/format image files for presentations and media releases.
  • Administers UBC Media Relations image database and fulfills image requests using UBC News' various sources.
  • Assists in organizing materials and services for press conferences and similar events; assembles media kits, media training materials and other collateral.
  • Is uptodate on current issues. Maintains and provides information on current issues and the appropriate handling of queries pertaining to those issues.
  • Supports with maintaining the Experts Guide database.
  • Maintains office procedures manuals, Media Relations files and archives.
  • Compiles, formats and publishes various external/internal communication products.
  • Maintains office supplies, arranging for purchase and delivery of required materials and services.
  • Provides weekly support to the Internal Communications team, including: website updates, administrative tasks, newsletter proofing, reporting on monthly metrics, and other tasks, as required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by Senior Director and/or Senior Media Strategist.
  • Other duties as required by the Communications portfolio.

Minimum Qualifications


High School graduation, plus two years of post-secondary education, plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
