The Emergency Food Hamper Program helps people living in Kitchener/Waterloo who have no food and no way of getting food.

We are seeking a reliable, friendly and organized individual to join our team as a Food Assistance Support Worker.

This person will work with our team at the Emergency Food Hamper program helping to provide food assistance to people living on a low-income in Kitchener/Waterloo.

Some of the duties will include providing intake, assisting with screening and warehouse work.


This is a permanent, salaried, full-time position (37.5 hours per week).

The schedule is weekdays, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Support with intake by assisting individuals and families to identify their concerns, increase awareness of and access to resources and make necessary referrals
  • Assist with packing food hampers, screening, program administration and volunteer support tasks
  • Receive, sort and organize storage of food and nonfood items
  • Support operations of the Emergency Food Hamper warehouse
  • Work with volunteers and staff to keep Emergency Food Hampers space clean and organized
  • Support program evaluation and statistics collection, as needed

Skills Experience:


  • Minimum high school education is required
  • Customer service experience and experience working with the public required
  • Previous warehouse and/or retail experience is an asset
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Knowledge of food safety issues required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, comfort working with members of the public and participants
  • Knowledge of social work principles and/or food security issues would be an asset
  • Proficiency with basic computer operations, ability to use a database to input and retrieve participant information
  • Ability to work independently in a busy environment, problem solve and adapt to new situations
  • Attention to detail, ability to achieve thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task
  • Ability to maintain health and safety standards and contribute to a safe and healthy work place
  • Ability to speak nonEnglish languages would be an asset
  • Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
  • Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required
  • Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
  • Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs
  • Experience with and commitment to using an antiracism, antioppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery
  • Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude
  • Respectful, supportive and engaging approach to persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, addictions, mental illness and other life challenges
  • Excellent project, timeline and deadline management skills including skills in logistics, planning and detailed record keeping

Rate of Pay:


Note:
Most new team members will start somewhere between the start rate and the mid point of the range.

Working Conditions:


  • 37.5 hours per week; Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm
  • This position involves some heavy lifting must be physically able to lift and move boxes and bags up to 40 pounds; must be able to stand for several hours
  • Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected

COVID-19 Vaccination Policy:

To maintain the safety of staff and participants, House of Friendship has implemented a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy.

All Staff hired after October 19, 2021 are required to provide proof of being Fully Vaccinated against COVID-19 as a pre-condition of their employment or placement offer.

If an individual is unable to be vaccinated against COVID-19, they will be required to submit written proof verifying a medical reason or by submitting a request under the Ontario Human Rights Code and agree to regular Rapid Antigen Testing at least two times per week.
