As a Roadway Maintenance Leader I, you will be a working foreman in charge of a crew engaged in performing many differing aspects of the auxiliary structures program during the summer season.

You will be responsible for the work performed by the members of the crew, ensuring compliance to all methods, procedures in respect to the task being performed.


Your duties may include:

  • Delivery of field projects and maintenance repairs of auxiliary assets such as: repair/replacement of chain link and wooden fences, guardrails and deterrent posts, signs, sandboxes, concrete work, and timber structures
  • Participate in the review, update and usage of SOP and Hazard Assessments
  • Complete Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs) and engage staff in promoting a safe work environment
  • Leads crew to various job sites in relation to predetermined schedules, assesses field conditions upon arrival, directs the setup of equipment and manpower and initiates appropriate traffic control and related safety measures as required
  • Assign work tasks to labourers, demonstrate the use of equipment and tools to train individual crew members as required
  • Participates in equipment operations, labouring activities etc, as required
  • Coach and mentor field staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development
  • Evaluate the current capabilities and productivity of individual crew members and identifying training and development needs
  • Monitor the performance of staff, providing feedback as required
  • Set performance expectations and escalating to Supervisor
  • Complete time cards including labour, equipment, materials and accomplishments
  • Promote a positive reporting culture for all incidents and near misses, and participate in safety inspections
  • Participate in equipment operations, labouring activities, etc, as required
  • Perform other related duties as required


As a Labourer II, you will assist in the construction and maintenance of Auxiliary structures assets throughout the City of Edmonton during the winter season.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operation of power tools, hand tools and small equipment, such as chainsaws, tampers, mowers, jackhammers, blower packs, generators, etc
  • Construction, repair and cleaning of auxiliary assets such as fences, railings, streetscape, etc
  • Assist in the maintenance and construction of wooden sidewalks, stairs, bollards, fences and guardrails, noise walls, retaining walls, sandboxes, A-Frames, etc
  • Perform graffiti abatement as required
  • Perform snow removal as required
  • Load and unload material from truck to work site and vice versa
  • Assist with flagging procedures when required
  • Assist with yard duties when required
  • Assists with digging holes and trenches
  • Operation of light delivery vehicles transporting material and supplies
  • Work independently when familiar with duties; work is monitored by supervisor to ensure production meets standards
  • Read and interpret surface grading plans and drawings
  • Perform work within standard safety and environment requirements
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by Supervisory Training
  • Certifications in the use of skid steer, chainsaw,, knuckle boom crane and/or ground disturbance
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience with Auxiliary Structures, including work in graffiti abatement, chain link and wooden fence, guardrail and deterrent posts and/or concrete work and including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment, such as skid steer and crane truck
  • Experience leading crews and mentoring employees
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform the work of the class
  • Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in auxiliary structures and of the relevant occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Good written and oral communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to maintain simple records
  • Proficiency in SAP, Google Applications (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Calendar) and databases
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver's licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
