Supporting the University Advancement (UA) team at McMaster, this role will be a dedicated resource with expertise proactively drawn upon to advance institutional equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility goals; to enact inclusive excellence principles and to establish a respectful learning and working environment free from harassment and discrimination.


UA at McMaster University is an integrated department that encompasses the areas of Development (fundraising), Alumni Engagement, Stewardship, and Advancement Services & Operations, working collaboratively with McMaster's Faculties and units across campus.


Embedded in all aspects of our strategic plan is a deep commitment to McMaster's EDI strategy by building relationships with McMaster's alumni, donors, friends, volunteers, and communities, and securing resources in support of the University's mission and priorities.

This dedicated resource will support furthering the strategies within UA that advance unit-specific and institutional equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility goals; to enact inclusive excellence principles.

The Specialist role will provide insight into various campaign planning activities, including donor strategies.


Job Summary


Reporting to the University Advancement HR lead, and with a close working relationship to the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO)'s Manager of Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Programs, in close consultation to the Black, Indigenous and Racialized Staff (BIRS) Employee Resource Group (ERG), the Specialist supports UA's goals of fostering inclusive excellence in its programming, organizational structuring, hiring and recruitment, etc.


The Specialist fulfills their duties in a manner that reflects the diverse experiences and interests of equity-deserving groups (EDGs) and acknowledges and honours Indigenous wisdom, self-determination and ways of knowing.

The Specialist leads the design, delivery and evaluation of programs and other initiatives aligned with UA's commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and anti-racism along with a 3-5 year strategic planning goal on EDI undertaken in a manner that reflects the diverse experiences and interests of equity-deserving groups The Specialist fulfills the roles of consultant, advocate, teacher, navigator, facilitator, project manager and collaborator, working closely with department and university colleagues to create and sustain a culture and experience of inclusive excellence.


The Specialist will work in consultation, collaboration and alignment with the Organizational Development/Employment Equity/Talent teams, to support implementing and operationalizing workplace EDI programs, training and employee experience initiatives for staff and faculty.

The Specialist is also a first line resource for support and information to staff and/or faculty who identify as members of an equity-deserving group, ensuring safe spaces and processes to identify, to consult and refer to appropriate intake offices or leadership within the department on matters related to experiences of discrimination, harassment and/or active EIO Inclusion and Anti-Racism team member.

The Specialist, EDI will establish mutually beneficial professional relationships and sharing best practices and resources as part of this community of practice.


Accountabilities:


The incumbent will:

  • Provide consultation to UA's leadership and other staff on best practices, review and analysis of existing practices and design of related improvements, relevant resources and training, and other areas of expertise relevant to achieving inclusive excellence;
  • Provide skilled project management services to the department in designing, planning, implementing and evaluating EDI and anti-racism initiatives in collaboration with the department's leadership team, including but not limited to a comprehensive training program tailored appropriately for all staff, that reflect emerging evidence-based pedagogies for effective knowledge dissemination and skill-building in relation to EDI and anti-racism, addressing such topics as the continuum of hate, implicit bias, intersectionality, systemic discrimination, allyship, active witnessing and bystander intervention, for example;
  • Provide first-level consultation, support and advocacy for Department members who have experienced discrimination and/or harassment, or those who have other concerns as a member of an equity-deserving group;
  • Develop, monitor and reconcile budgets related to EDI and anti-racism initi
