MNFC Program Manager


General Description:


The Food Coordinator will oversee various food-based programming such as, but not limited to food bank, community gardens, community feasts, community fridge/freezer, food preparation, nutrition/budgeting classes, and sharing Indigenous land-based food knowledge.


The Food Coordinator will provide support through a trauma informed, person-centred, anti-oppressive, decolonized, and Indigenous lens with an emphasis on harm-reduction principals.

An integral part of this position is having the ability to work with a Two -Eyed seeing approach to practices and duties, while simultaneously providing Indigenous based services for programs.


Key Accountabilities

  • Create and maintain a monthly calendar and work plan; incorporating monthly individual meetings with community members, partners and programs including goals and objectives.
  • Compile various reports for MNFC, various funders, stakeholders, and community.
  • Ensure all aspects of food handler's regulations are being met.
  • Monitoring gift card distribution.
  • Creating and maintaining food services/program volunteer database.
  • Develop program files and implement an organization system; ensure files are kept confidential as required.
  • Create and maintain communication with the Mijipjewey Kepmite'timu'k (MNFC Food Working) group.
  • Ensure the coordination and delivery of programs are congruent with the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre's mission, vision, and philosophy by representing the unique needs within the urban Indigenous community.

_Schedule and facilitate monthly meetings with MNFC programs to address key areas such as community-based programming, responsibilities and to provide feedback to the Mijipjewey Kepmite'timu'k group ensure needs are being met

  • Establishing educations for community members (ex. Meal planning, budgeting and shopping, food math, cooking classes, healthier choices, rewards and couponing, home gardening, etc.)
  • Ensure a positive, healthy, safe, and culturally rich experience for all community members based in Indigenous ways of being and knowing.
  • Develop and implement programming for community members that will help to build upon their food preparation, preservation, and sovereignty skills and building sustained capacity.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and communicate any kitchen/food spaces maintenance as needed.
  • Establish working relationships and collaborative arrangements with Indigenous and nonIndigenous foodfocused organizations, to create and enhance programming.
  • Building relationships with traditional local hunters and gatherers and sharing this knowledge with community.
  • Partnership with the Wije'winen Health Centre to create public health education events, chronic disease management, and development of a culturally relevant inpatient food service.
  • Adapt to the complex and varied needs of community members considering income, housing (special focus for unhoused), dietary restrictions, and allergies.
  • Building focused programming around traditional foods and practices.
  • Community gardens (management, upkeep, shared responsibility with partners).
  • Disaster planning and emergency food distribution.
  • Adhere to all policies governing the Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Position:

  • Food-related knowledge base: degree/diploma in human nutrition or culinary fields, food industry experience, or equivalent lived experiences
  • Knowledge of the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Canada's Food Guide
  • Food handler's certification (preferable if able to train/certify others)
  • Valid Driver's license with clean driver's abstract, proof of insurance, and ability to drive company vehicles
  • Demonstrated skills in guiding individuals, and the development of new practices in working with community based on models of practice and Indigenous culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively as a part of an interprofessional team.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and comprehensive cultural knowledge considered an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check), and food handlers certification as a condition of employment
