OUTDOOR EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR
100% Term to approx. March 3, 2024


ESP Level 6:
$38,030 to $48,583 per annum

35 hours per week, Monday to Friday (works 10.5 months per year)

Ability to speak French would be an asset


Reporting to the Coordinator of Outdoor Education, the Outdoor Education Instructor is responsible for implementing and evaluating a variety of curriculum-based outdoor education programs at the OCDSB Outdoor Education Centres (Bill Mason or MacSkimming), including instructing these programs to a range of audiences, from preschool to adults, in an outdoor setting.


Community college program in Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies, Natural Science, or a related field of study, and two years of relevant outdoor education experience; An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also be considered.

Experience in adult education and/or instructing students

First Aid and CPR certification is required.


Certificates in cross-country skiing, canoeing, nature-based activities and leadership education would be considered an asset, as well as the ability to operate ATV, snowmobile, and outboard motor boat.


Knowledge of relevant Board policies and procedures and all aspects of outdoor education including provincial education curriculum, environmental studies, local ecology, and cultural/natural history.

Knowledge of, and experience in instructing a wide range of audiences from preschool, elementary and secondary students to adult.

Organization and time management skills to prioritize work and manage multiple priorities, demands and projects.


Interpersonal and (oral and written) communication skills required to prepare course material, to exchange, clarify and provide information on procedures, programs and services, and respond to inquiries using tact, diplomacy and discretion.

Presentation skills for instructing/delivery of programs.

Ability to demonstrate initiative and judgment.


Able to adapt to a flexible outdoor work environment, keep knowledge base current, learn new materials and curriculum without instruction, and work outside with mínimal supervision.

Ability to speak French is an asset.
