Do you have strong research and statistical skills? If so, Science and Research Branch is looking for a person to provide specialized scientific, statistical and technical support to forest productivity and growth and yield modelling projects.


The Forest Research and Monitoring Section at the Ontario Forest Research Institute (OFRI) is committed to providing scientific leadership and excellence in forest research, program development, and technology transfer to a range of natural resource clients in Ontario.

We work in support of policy development and operational resource management to contribute to the management of Ontario's forest ecosystems.

Major emphases include understanding ecosystem processes, patterns and diversity; evaluating disturbance effects and recovery of forest ecosystems; developing alternative silvicultural practices to achieve sustainable forestry objectives; and developing methods and tools to support sustainable resource use decisions.

We work in partnership with our clients and in cooperation with other scientific organizations to ensure the effectiveness of our efforts.

What can I expect to do in this role?: In this role, you will,:

  • Coordinate data collection, maintenance and management for large and complex data sets.
  • Perform landscapelevel analyses and assist in the running, managing and coordinating of large complex computer simulations of various models with team members;
  • Analyze, interpret and compare modelling results using GIS, python and R, prepare data summaries, and present the results to other team members.;
  • Assist in designing and maintaining databases and file structures for both data and file management;
  • Provide support to Geographic Information System (GIS) users.

How do I qualify?:


Technical Knowledge:


  • You demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge of computer simulation modeling;
  • You have knowledge of the ecology of boreal and temperate terrestrial ecosystems;
  • You have an understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Computer Proficiency:


  • You are knowledgeable of and have demonstrated experience with maintaining database records, manipulating, analyzing and managing tabular and spatial data;
  • You have knowledge of and experience with computer hardware, software (e.g. LANDIS-II) and networking systems; troubleshooting and managing GIS software and databases;
  • You demonstrate advanced skills in computer programming techniques and languages to manage large databases, develop tools and calibrate and adapt models;
  • You have knowledge of geographical information systems, large database management, spreadsheet, word processing, and graphics software;
  • You are proficient at scripting using open source programming languages such as Python and R to automate tasks;
  • You have experience with data management tools (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access ) and techniques;
  • You demonstrate excellent organizational and planning skills;
  • You are comfortable working using the command line to run scripts and other command line tools;
  • Comfortable working with very large, disparate datasets.

Communication Skills:


  • You have effective oral and written communication skills;.
  • You are able to explain modeling techniques, mathematics, and scientific methods and results to diverse audiences.
