Description
The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the Principal in overseeing the day-to-day operation of
the educational facility. This position will work with students and staff to maintain a positive and professional
learning environment that is conducive to student success. The Assistant Principal will work with all school
staff to provide leadership regarding the school's curriculum, scheduling, extracurricular activities,
emergency operations, and the management of conduct and discipline. The Assistant Principal will also
serve as a role model and assist staff and students with achieving an optimal educational experience.
As a leader in the organization, the Principal will model the intent of the Maskwacis Declaration on
Education and the core values of Wahkotowin, Iyiniw Mamotohnehickikan, Nehiyaw Pimatisiwin, and
Nehiyawewin. This is evident by

  • Ensuring that decisions are made to the ultimate benefit of Maskwacis students;
  • Assisting the Superintendent and the board to ensure that all students benefit from their treaty right
to quality education;

  • Respecting the Cree language, spirituality, and traditions within the Education Authority; and
  • Providing Maskwacis leadership (the Cree way) in all matters relating to education in the

Maskwacis Schools:
consensus building, creating a dialogue with stakeholders, and empowering leadership in the system.


Qualifications

Interested applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the Cree language, culture, and traditions;
  • Bachelor's degree of education required;
  • Master's degree preferred;
  • Valid Alberta teaching certificate required; and
  • At least five years of ECSgrade 12 teaching experience and/or school leadership experience

Knowledge and Skills
The knowledge and skills required for this position include:

  • Knowledge of the Nehiyawewin language, culture, and traditions.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, public relations, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong oral and written skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Initiative to set priorities and identify plans of action.
  • Ability to work effectively with school personnel, parents, students, and community members.
  • Aware of and ability to appropriately interpret all applicable laws and regulations for education,
policies, and practices.

  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity, showing respect to staff, parents, and members of the public.
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal skills, organization, written, and public relations skills.
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn new software.
  • High critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning level to identify underlying principles,
reasons, or facts.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
  • Culturally and politically sensitive.
  • Good organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work.
