JOB DESCRIPTION:


The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture (ISH) partners with agricultural and agri-technology companies in our region to support innovation with research and development projects that promote sustainability in the sector.

Current projects include developing microbial biocontrol products for pests and diseases, natural soil amendments and inoculants, biofertilizers, tissue culture, alternative growing systems, agritech and soil microbial health.


RESEARCH ASSISTANT ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and present regular Powerpoint research updates to industry partner
  • Stay focused even when tasks get repetitive
  • Use and practice your critical thinking skills

REQUIREMENTS:


  • Registered student in Horticulture or related discipline or recent graduate (graduated within last 2 years)
  • Experience or coursework in horticulture, biology, chemistry, microbiology, working in labs or greenhouses is an asset. Greenhouse safety training an asset.
  • Willingness to learn new things
  • Teamwork experience an asset
  • Reasonable physically fitness level. The greenhouse environment can be hot and uncomfortable. Work includes physical labour, such as moving plants and equipment around, pruning, harvesting, cleaning equipment before and after a trial
  • Must meet MITACS requirements for student internship

REPORTS TO:
Director, Institute for Sustainable Horticulture. Works with Greenhouse Research Coordinator, ISH technical staff.


HOURS: 35 hours/week + 4% vacation pay (paid with each paycheque)


REMUNERATION:
$18/hour


START DATE:
February 15, weeks)
