Duties and Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Head of Cataloguing, Metadata, & Digitization (CMD), the Metadata Analyst provides resource description and metadata analysis for the Library's collections.

The Metadata Analyst creates and remediates bibliographic, holdings, and authority records in the Library Services Platform (LSP) using batch processes and metadata refinement tools.

The incumbent supports metadata creation and remediation for the Institutional Repository and other digital platforms, ensures accessibility and EDI standards are met for all metadata formats, and provides support for linked data initiatives the department.

The incumbent assists with metadata and analytics requirements for the OCUL Collaborative Futures consortium and provides support for electronic resources as required.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Sound technical proficiency and competencies in bibliographic description principles and concepts, cataloguing standards, and record encoding.
  • Familiarity with library terminology and tools.
  • Ability to understand LC and CODOC classification schedules.
  • Interpretation skills for MARC21 and RDA/AACR2 standards.
  • Continuous development of practical skills in linked data concepts and batch metadata processes.
  • Proficiency in the Library Services Platform.
  • Familiarity with analytics tools and query languages.
  • Competence in remediation and digital editing software.
  • Understanding of current accessibility requirements for resource access.
  • Knowledge of administrative and office software packages.
  • Awareness of library industry standards and their development.
  • Familiarity with OCUL consortium cataloguing policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of EDIA requirements for resource description and equitable information access.
  • Knowledge of physical maintenance of library materials, formats, and their characteristics.

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Completion of an Undergraduate degree and a two-year Library Technician diploma required.
  • Three years of relevant Library experience preferred, with knowledge of cataloguing and metadata standards including MARC21, RDA/AACR2, and Library of Congress Classification. Experience with metadata refinement tools like MarcEdit, OpenRefine, and Python is a plus.
