Summary of Duties:


Reporting to the Manager, Waste Collection, the Supervisor, Waste Collection is responsible for effective and efficient delivery of waste management services focusing on collection.

Plans, develops, supervises, and co-ordinates various aspects and functions of the waste management processes within the Division. Supervises staff and carries out special projects.


The Supervisor will be required to assist and/or perform Supervisory activities at the City-owned W12A Landfill Site from time to time.

The Supervisor is required to work in collection, disposal and household special waste areas and must undergo the appropriate training involved with each one of these functions.


Work Performed:


  • Responsible for supervising employees including hiring, administration, training and performance aspects of reporting employees; respond to and refer sensitive and confidential human resource issues as required.
  • Manage staff, programs and collection services in accordance with applicable legislation, guidelines, municipal policies, municipal bylaws, procedures, practices and directives.
  • Demonstrate commitment to City of London policies, goals and objectives such as the Respectful Workplace Policy, support for antiracism, antioppression, and human rights, through interactions with stakeholders, employees and individuals. Promote programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment.
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Provide leadership in the execution and delivery of services and programs in the following areas of accountability:
  • Complete work within collection, disposal and hazardous waste areas.
  • Evaluate operational performance and recommend changes to systems, procedures and methodologies to maximize use of resources.
  • Responsible for planning, scheduling and assigning work in collections, disposal and household hazardous waste areas.
  • Monitor assigned budget and provide reports as required.
  • Undertake special projects as assigned.
  • Provide management representation on various committees as assigned.
  • Act as a corporate representative with other government agencies and service deliverers.
  • Maintain practical awareness of relevant legislation and the Corporation of the City of London bylaws.
  • Investigate complaints, resolve problems, and maintain good public relations.
  • Fairly and consistently administer provisions of various collective agreements.
  • Build and encourage employee commitment to a high level of performance in all areas of customer service, employee safety and delivery of individual goals and objectives.
  • Encourage and support employee participation and commitment to divisional and organizational objectives. Actively mentor, provide development opportunities and build team performance with direct reports.
  • Track performance measures for Unit deliverables using appropriate data collection and analytics.
  • Participate as directed on City of London and partner organization committees and teams.
  • Make recommendations and provide advice to other Service Areas and Divisions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience:


  • Completion of a threeyear Community College program in a related field along with courses in topics relevant to leadership development and employee supervision, or an equivalent combination of education and related professional and lived community experience.
  • Class G driver's licence is required with ability to travel to various locations.

Skills and abilities in the following areas are necessary:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the above identified areas of accountability with an understanding of Waste Collection programs and services and related waste management services such as waste disposal, household special waste management, recycling collection, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a waste environment with exposure to various products, odours, and climate conditions.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of related legislation and statues; understanding and ability to interpret related legislation for others.
  • Demonstrated success leading or supervising employees, contracted services and consultants.
  • Proven commitment to the safety of employees with knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position. Ability to follow all health and safety rules as set out by City of London policy.
  • Ability to understand the importance of service delivery; develop and implement initiatives that support the Unit's customers in a timely and effective way.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer services skills, including conflict resolution and problem solving; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with diverse populations within the community; experience working collaboratively with organizations, clients, and other stake holders.
