Do you have a passion for knowledge and excellent customer service skills? Oakville Public Library has seven library branches that are dedicated to serving the diverse community of Oakville. In this role, you'll work within the Collections Operations Department to perform various library operations to order, receive and maintain library materials.

What you'll do

As an Acquisition and Cataloguing Technician you will:

  • Create and maintain new library material orders in all formats using ILS Acquisitions module and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI); manually creating orders for special collections
  • Download, review, verify, and edit MARC Records from vendors and partner organizations; streaming items with significant cataloguing changes to the Cataloguing Team as required.
  • Create original and derived cataloguing of library material in all formats according to established cataloguing and classification principles and local library practices.
  • Run Claims reports in Acquisitions module according to schedule, communicating issues with internal staff and with vendors as needed
  • Contact vendors to claim outstanding items or to cancel orders, as required
  • Download or input invoices into Symphony Acquisitions module, approve and submit invoices for final payment from Accounts Payable department
  • Index local newspaper articles and notices for birth, death and marriages for archival purposes using VITA Toolkit
  • Upload borndigital newspaper issues using VITA Toolkit
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, other relevant health and safety legislation, and the Oakville Public Library's Health & Safety Program
  • Assist with other duties as assigned

  • Experience with AACR2, RDA, LSCH, MARC Standards and MARC editing tools
  • Experience with an Integrated Library System (ILS) acquisitions and cataloguing modules, Symphony experience considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of cataloguing tools such as Bookwhere and OCLC Connexion
  • Knowledge of acquisitions tools such as FTP and EDI

Your experience and educational background:


  • Library and Information Technician diploma with minimum 2 years library experience or will consider an equivalent combination of education and experience
