Position Summary


Under the direction of the Jordan's Principle Program Manager, the Jordan's Principle Housing Advocate must have extensive experience working in and with the First Nations children, youth and families.

The Jordan's Principle Housing Advocate must be able to work both independently and within a team environment to provide support to First Nation families who are seeking suitable housing.

They will be responsible for liaising with community organizations, government agencies and property owners.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support First Nation families and/or special needs children/adults requiring multiple services and resources through discussions with key contacts of the provincial and federal government departments and agencies, together with local and regional First Nations and other resources.
  • Supports and assists clients and families in establishing a process for resolution of concerns and referral to key contacts (federal, provincial) or external as appropriate.
  • Assessing eligibility and determining housing and services needed for First Nation families
  • Collaborate with government agencies, community organizations and property owners
  • Ensuring that families understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants and support families who require advocacy
  • Supporting First Nation families who are relocating from remote First Nations, residing in hotels, shelters and require immediate housing
  • Communicates to the clients/families the rationale for health care specific interventions and plans
  • Involves the clients/families in developing the care and support plan.
  • Communicates to the clients/families, as necessary, referral information that will be given to appropriate community organizations.
  • Collaborates with and make referrals to appropriate service providers and or programs
  • Coordinate the activities with other health and social disciplines in implementing the individual discharge and follow up plans for selected children (Nursing Stations, Health Centre's, NIHB, Patient Transportation Unit, Home Care, Education, Child and Family Service Agency, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality according to PHIA standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Post-Secondary degree in Human Services (Native Studies, Social Studies, etc.)
  • Equivalent combination of education and a minimum of five (5) years' direct experience working in the child welfare system, working with First Nation individuals with complex medical conditions, disabilities may be considered.
  • Superior verbal, listening written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates problem solving, time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with Residential Tenancies branch (RTB), Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) and various housing organizations within Winnipeg
  • Experience working with child and family services and have an understanding various legislations pertaining to the best interest of the child.
  • Experience working effectively with First Nation individuals and communities
  • Knowledge and familiarity of the programs and resources available to First Nations citizens off Reserve
  • Knowledge of First Nation culture, traditions, attitudes, and socioeconomic conditions
  • Experience in using Client Centered Case Management as a service delivery tool.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective work relationships with coworkers, clients, and external agencies.
  • Ability to work closely with a variety of stakeholders including health care executives and professionals, senior levels of government and community members.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Fluent in a First Nations language would be an asset.
  • Adhere to AMC policies, and procedures with specific attention to attendance, and professional ethics.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Child Abuse Checks.
