the program

the challenge
To engage and connect with members of newcomer communities, including youth, women, and seniors. The Community Connector helps newcomers find community programs that suit their interests and needs. As part of our team, you'll provide support in planning and implementing community program activities.

While the LEAP program is at the heart of our work, you'll also collaborate across the department to offer comprehensive support to newcomers, newcomer families, and communities.


the opportunity

  • Foster connections with service providers, ethnic community associations, and various stakeholders to raise awareness of our community programs and EMCN services.
  • Identify and engage potential program participants and connect or refer them to suitable programs.
  • Facilitate active participation of community members in program activities, providing necessary resources and referrals when needed.
  • Stay informed about the recruitment objectives and referral procedures of community programs.
  • Collaborate with program facilitators to strategize and execute program activities and meetings.
  • Offer logístical support as required to ensure smooth program operations.

what it takes


While all backgrounds will be considered, the most helpful history will include three years of experience working with newcomers and refugee youth, women, seniors and their families, and community networking.

Related experience augmented with a certificate in Social Sciences, Human Services, Community Development or a related field is preferred.


To do this job satisfactorily, the role requires a willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

A
valid Class 5 drivers' license and reliable vehicle access are also essential for fulfilling the responsibilities of this position.

Our operating system is Microsoft 365 so proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and database management is crucial for success.

Additionally, having familiarity with online hosting, facilitation and conferencing platforms and software is highly beneficial.

  • Proven track record in community networking and building relationships, preferably with established connections in newcomer communities.
  • Indepth knowledge and experience in providing support to newcomers.
  • Demonstrated expertise in supporting communitydriven programming, specifically with a focus on youth, women, or seniors.
  • Exceptional organizational and problemsolving abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment, working alongside colleagues from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, and proficiency in one or more additional languages such as Dari, Oromo, Pashto, or Tigrinya is highly advantageous.
  • Demonstrated intercultural cultural awareness and sensitivity and understands/ adheres to professional code of ethics and abides by FOIP and PIPAed regulations, legislation and company policies
