The Parkland School Division currently has a Permanent Full-Time (1.0 FTE) Caretaker V position available at High Park School in Stony Plain, Alberta.


Function and Purpose of Position

A Head Caretaker (Caretaker IV and V) is responsible for all caretaking duties of the school facility both internal and external.

Ability to priorities and oversee the work of other staff is required. Ensuring the premises are clean, tidy and prepared for the students, staff and general public is essential.


Head Caretaker's may:

  • Reports to the Supervisor of Environmental Services
  • Works independently and as part of the school community
  • Works on assigned duties by Principal on an as needed basis

Service Responsibilities:


  • Fulfill caretaking responsibilities within assigned designated area (including duties listed on Caretaker II job description.
  • Oversee the work in the school by regular and casual caretaking staff including monitoring work behaviour and performance to report to Supervisor.
  • Coordinating use of the school, overseeing the public use of the facility, assisting with set up and proper use of equipment.
  • Maintaining inventory of caretaking supplies and taking responsibility for ordering and distributing of supplies within the school.
  • Ensuring that caretaking equipment is properly utilized and maintained.
  • Conducting regular tours of the facility and grounds, inspecting work performed by caretaking personnel.
  • Assisting with the relocation and setup of furniture for special events as required.
  • Preparing, tracking and maintaining files on employee time sheets, work orders, accident reports, perimeter checks, equipment checks, fire extinguisher checks and resource binders.
  • Conducting weekly safety meetings with custodial staff.
  • Ability to work flexible hours/schedule during holiday periods and annual cleaning schedules.
  • Skilled in the use of a variety of equipment: vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, polishers, wet vacuums and other related equipment.
  • Handling emergency situations that arise while on duty.
  • Checking all doors and windows to make sure the building is secure.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Environmental Services.

Occupational Health and Safety & Safe Work Practices:

  • Knowledgeable in PSDs safety procedures and training to carry out the assigned duties safely
  • Report any near misses or accidents immediately to the Supervisor of Environmental Services
  • Able to identify any hazards involved in the assigned task, detail the controls that must be put in place and articulates the specific practices to be followed to minimize the possibility of accidents and injury
  • An ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the safe use of chemicals.
  • Monitoring the physical condition of equipment, tools and machinery and taking necessary precautions to correct as needed
  • Comply with Occupation Health and Safety standards and practices

Communication and Relationship s**:


  • Interactions with management, colleagues, students and the public in a school setting
  • Responds to client concerns in a fast and efficient manner.
  • Establishes and maintains professional working relationship

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):


  • Task specific PPE is required
  • Clothing must be appropriate for assigned task i.e. no torn or ragged clothing
  • Other additional PPE may include footwear, gloves, etc.
Other Duties


Education and Experience

a) Education:
i) High School Diploma
ii) Working Alone Certificate is an asset
iii) WHMIS Certificate an asset
iv) First Aid/CPR Certificate an asset
v) Building Service Work Certificate an asset


b) Experience:
i years of related experience.

Equivalencies will be considered.
