Based on the secondary school calendar to June 30, 2023 and September 1 to December 31, 2023


Location:
Bowmanville and other community locations as required

Travel:
Yes, as required (mileage reimbursement)

Hours:

Monday to Friday 28 hours per week (averages 5.6 hours per day), during the school calendar of September to June.


The John Howard Society of Durham Region (JHSD) is a non-profit, social service agency dedicated to serving all individuals, families, youth and adults in programs in areas such as Community and Justice, Employment and Training and Housing/ Residential Services.


Role:


The CASS program is facilitated by the John Howard Society of Durham Region (JHS), in partnership with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

(KPR).

The primary role of the JHS CASS Facilitator is to provide non-academic support to suspended and/or expelled students from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

The support plan is driven by the youth in the program and involves working 1:1 and/or in groups providing information and counselling in such areas as life skills, decision-making, conflict resolution, communication, employment support, etc.

Non-academic supports also include facilitating and supervising community hours by developing volunteer opportunities with local non-profit organizations.


Tasks

Service User Support

  • Provide individual counselling and support to address issues and underlying causes that students face related to school suspension/expulsion
  • Attend intake and reentry meetings with school personnel as required.
  • Meet established deadlines in respect of required reporting to KPR and JHS
  • Manage program and agency change in a positive manner.
  • Work effectively with a diverse population of children and youth.

Case Management/Documentation

  • Plan and prepare life skill workshops and materials to compliment program delivery.
  • Must possess a judgmentfree attitude and be prepared to meet regularly with parent(s)/guardians to assess overall student participation and performance in the CASS program.
  • Create and maintain case notes, progress reports and client files with a clear rationale for methods and interventions used, and statistical documentation in accordance with program requirements
  • Maintain a list of community placements and contacts for the nonacademic component of the program.
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports for the John Howard Society and School Board
  • Utilize agency technology for recordkeeping; create, process, and maintain a variety of documents and administrative records.
  • Monitor and maintain financial tracking where required.
  • Meet all required deadlines.

Community Liaison

  • Contribute to program strategy by maintaining awareness of the Safe Schools Act (2000), the Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct and the Policies and Procedures developed by the school board.
  • Liaise and work collaboratively and cocooperatively with the Safe Schools teacher, other School Board staff, students, and caregivers to ensure seamless CASS program delivery within the Municipality of Clarington
  • Attend scheduled Partnership meetings.
  • Maintain good rapport and establish new external partners in the community that provide volunteer opportunities for students.
  • Research and contact potential community partnerships.
  • Support other agency programs where needed and as required.
  • Represent the agency in the community when required.

Other

  • Access to a reliable vehicle (with minimum coverage of $2 Million liability)
  • Possesses a valid G driver's license.
  • Able to drive students and participate in various volunteer opportunities.

Requirements:


  • Postsecondary diploma or degree in a related field of study
  • A minimum of (2) years of experience working with youth
  • Strong understanding of the community and the needs of youth
  • Knowledge of theory, principles and practices relating to atrisk youth
  • Excellent problemsolving ability
  • Able to confidently communicate with youth, school personnel and caregivers.
