Position
The University of Alberta provides central shipping and receiving services for all University units.

The primary function of this operation is to prepare outbound shipments for transport and receive all incoming shipments for the campus while ensuring compliance with the various local, regional, provincial, national and international regulatory agencies.

The U of A uses a central model for shipping and receiving which reduces vehicular traffic on campus, concentrates the handling and regulatory expertise required for the smooth movement of goods to and from campus, and acts as a resource minimizing the risk of non-compliance with current regulations.

The shipper/receiver handles items from envelopes to full trailer loads and ensures that items are properly declared and packaged prior to shipping.

As items arrive on campus, the shipper/receiver is responsible to confirm shipments are the property of the University, check for damage, ensure adequate paperwork arrives with the shipments and process the shipment for delivery on campus.


Duties

  • The Shipper/Receiver is responsible for confirming that shipments arriving at Materials Management are the property of the University and noted any damage, if applicable
  • Unloading, sorting and staging incoming items, ensuring that perishable and other timesensitive items are separated and staged in the sameday delivery area
  • Prepares and offers shipments for transport to various local, national and international destinations. This includes preparing Customs and other documents as necessary and confirming that all required documents are in place prior to shipping
  • Works closely with the Distribution Dispatcher to schedule deliveries, maintain the flow through the staging areas and respond to questions related to inbound and outbound shipments
  • Maintains an organized filing system and supports the tracking system by updating the system and ensuring that the handhelds are in good working order

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12, supplemented by 2 to 3 years related experience in the transportation industry
  • Current certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) and IATA and an understanding of how to handle dangerous goods
  • Must understand and follow all identified safety processes
  • Minimum 2 years experience using shipping systems and receipt tracking systems strong knowledge of shipping methods
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian export regulations and world geography
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Experience with equipment moving devices (forklift, pallet jacks, carts)
  • Strong computer skills
