McMaster University Library is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative librarian to join the Teaching and Learning Division.


The Digital Learning Librarian provides expertise and leadership in support of the digital teaching and learning activities of the University Library.

In collaboration with the AUL, Teaching and Learning, their Teaching and Learning colleagues, and others within the Library, they will develop and implement a strategy to guide the Library's current and future online learning initiatives.

They will work collaboratively to design, document and implement Library-focussed policies, workflows and best practices for online and hybrid instruction and for the development, maintenance and evaluation of the online learning objects, including videos, modules and other interactive media.

The incumbent will function as a resource for their Library colleagues in the use of educational technology and accessible and inclusive instructional design.

The Digital Learning Librarian will partner with their Teaching and Learning colleagues to provide instruction and research support for one or more faculties or programs.


  • Work collaboratively with Teaching and Learning staff, the AUL, Teaching and Learning, and other Library colleagues involved in teaching and learning to develop strategy and plans for highimpact digital learning that aligns with key University frameworks, strategies and best practices and that advances information, data and other related literacies.
  • Implement, assess and update digital learning strategies and plans in cooperation with Library colleagues.
  • Collaborate with the Teaching and Learning Division and other Library colleagues to design, implement, document and/or revise policies, workflows and best practices for the Library's online and hybrid teaching. Develop strategies and workflows to manage the full life cycle of online learning objects. Works with others to identify appropriate inperson, hybrid, or digital solutions for students' learning needs.
  • Champion and enable the Library's design and delivery of equitable, inclusive and accessible digital learning experiences that reflects the diversity of learners on campus. Work to ensure online instruction aligns with relevant accessibility standards such as AODA, UDL principles and other best practices related to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Work closely with Library Accessibility Services and other campus units to ensure learning objects are fully accessible.
  • Work with the AUL, Teaching and Learning to deepen existing relationships with the MacPherson Institute to increase awareness and understanding of each service and identify additional opportunities for collaboration.
  • Provide guidance and coaching on instructional design, online pedagogy and on the effective use of educational technology and make referrals to the MacPherson Institute as needed to leverage the Institute's expertise.
  • Work with the Lyons New Media Centre to build capacity within members of the Teaching and Learning team and other Library staff in the effective use of software used to create online learning objects, including video and audio production and editing and VR.
  • In collaboration with the Teaching and Learning team and other Library colleagues, develop and implement best practices for the design and use of LibGuides and other software used in the Library's teaching and learning work and lead the evaluation of same. In collaboration with the AUL Teaching and Learning, work with the MacPherson Institute and University Technology Services to ensure the University's learning management system and other technology supports and enhances Library teaching and learning.
  • Monitor and evaluate emerging digital learning trends and technology relevant to the Library. Share new developments with the Teaching and Learning team and Library staff as appropriate and work with colleagues to adapt and respond to these.
  • Works collaboratively with one or more Teaching and Learning librarians to deliver instruction and research support to faculty, staff and students within one or more faculties or programs. Participates in outreach and other engagement activity led or supported by the Teaching and Learning Division.
  • Chair or serve as a member on Library and university committees, task forces and projects aligned with position responsibilities.
This is a full time, continuing appointment reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Teaching and Learning. Normally scheduled weekly hours will be Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm (35 hours/week).


Qualifications:


  • A Master's degree from an ALAaccredited school of library and information science or its equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience with online and inperson instruction in an academic library or equivalent context.
