Role Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Director, Health Policy this position provides strategic advice and coordination of approval and development of departmental policy priorities.

This position leads the unit's mandate to support all Ministry Branches in the alignment, coordination, scheduling, integration, and development of identified policy and legislative priorities.

The main focus of this position is on the initiation of policy development up to and including preparation for executive approval of Cabinet-bound packages.

The manager will interact with staff across the Ministry at all levels in achieving unit responsibilities and liaise with Executive Council offices including Policy Coordination and Cabinet Coordination Offices.

This position will also support, coordinate and represent the department on cross-government policy initiatives such as the Red Tape Reduction initiative.

The manager will be involved in the widest breadth and depth of policy development and integration.

A comprehensive understanding of the priorities of government, the department and health policy issues across the system will be required.

Further, a deep understanding and significant experience is required in developing policy problems and opportunities into well-researched and quality senior executive and central government decision documents.

This includes all facets of policy development including; problem definition, options identification, options analysis, research, strategic engagement and consultation, jurisdictional scans, writing and editing policy decision documents, understanding legislative products, policy levers, implementation, etc.


Qualifications:

University graduation in a field related (Public Administration / Business), supplemented by four years related experience in Health Policy.


Experience in the following areas will be considered an asset:

  • Experience in Government of Alberta policy development and integration
  • Experience in managing and leading in a large and complex work environment
  • Project management
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative teams, managing conflicting issues, and development of briefing materials for executive level decision makers
Related experience or education will be considered as an equivalency one-for-one for one basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
