Job Number:49709**At the City of Edmonton, the Gardener will report to the Horticulture Team Lead and Crew Lead. In addition to working with and providing technical support to our maintenance crews, you may be assigned training duties, custom enhanced Horticulture services or special projects as assigned. You will work with the team to provide the best Horticultural Practices within our Standards and budgetary confines of Open Space Operations.


As a Gardener in Parks and Roads Services, you will be a resource by providing best practices and custom horticultural services for the City of Edmonton.

As part of our Horticulture Team, you will ensure that our green infrastructure is both healthy and vibrant from a horticultural perspective

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Occupy a strong role working with the Horticulture crews throughout the year maintaining City inventory while weeding, maintaining annuals, pruning and mulching tasks
  • Perform shrub bed maintenance tasks alongside the crews, ensuring they are using appropriate techniques and maintenance strategies as per City policies
  • Provide mentorship to the Hort crews on site
  • Provide coverage for Crew Leaders
  • At times you may be required to provide competency testing and training on tools and equipment
  • Work with Crew Leaders to provide recommendations on how and when to renovate various horticultural landscapes throughout the City
  • Perform site assessments in the field and provide recommendations to Leaders and Supervisors
  • Participate in winter operations, including pruning/chipping
  • Assist with seasonal planning including Flower design and order
  • Assist with, collaborate on, updating and creating standard operating procedures and hazard assessments and other safety related functions
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Red Seal Journeyman Landscape Gardener or a Diploma in Horticulture, Turf Science or Forestry.
  • 5 years experience in Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance.
  • The ability to identify various plants, understand plant needs and familiarity with landscape design and maintenance
  • Demonstrate supervisory responsibility
  • Working knowledge of municipal parks operations
  • Ability to work in a unionized environment
  • Proven knowledge of Horticultural Best Management Practices
  • Knowledge of horticultural equipment operations and possesses technical skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Competency in Google functions
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Proven ability to train and mentor staff
  • Adaptability and ability to work in a changing environment
  • Ability to obtain additional training, permits, certifications or licenses as required
  • Emergency First Aid Level C with AED training
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers License (or provincial equivalent, GDL Not accepted). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers Permit (C-NSC) is a requirement of this position
  • Ability to complete the trailer training.
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steeltoed boots, is a requirement for this position
