The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating Ontario's capital markets in accordance with the mandate established in the provincial Securities Act and the Commodity Futures Act.

The mandate of the OSC is to provide protection to investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices, to foster fair, efficient and competitive capital markets and confidence in the capital markets, to foster capital formation, and to contribute to the stability of the financial system and the reduction of systemic risk.

This mandate is performed through policy, operational, adjudication and enforcement work. The OSC also contributes to national and global securities regulation development.

What We Do


The OSC is the only securities regulator in Canada to create a dedicated Investor Office with an aim to achieve better investor outcomes.

The

Investor Office


is a regulatory branch that sets the strategic direction and leads the OSC's efforts in investor engagement, education, outreach and research.

The Office develops investor policy; plays a key role in the oversight of the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments; and provides leadership at the OSC in the area of behavioural insights and improving the investor experience.

The Opportunity

The Investor Communications and Outreach Summer Student will provide support to the

Investor Office

teams (Education and Outreach, Policy and Initiatives and Investor Office Research and Behavioural Insights, also known as IORBIT).


In support of this work, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of financial topics and regulation, gain experience in a highly visible stakeholder environment, and obtain further insights into how to develop and execute communications and outreach plans.


In this role, you will be working with the Investor Office teams on social media projects, developing informational materials for new policy and research, assisting in the creation of modules for Investing Academy by and contributing to an expanded multicultural outreach program.

What do you need to be successful in this role?

  • In progress toward completing an undergraduate program including but not limited to Education, Business, Marketing, Communications, Political Science, Sociology
  • Basic courses or experience in writing, communications, legal, social science or business research are considered an asset
  • An understanding of how information is organized for easy identification and retrieval, including cataloguing and metadata standards for all formats
  • An aptitude for presenting information with high readability and in plain language
  • Experience writing content for a learning audience
  • Detailoriented with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to set priorities and find creative solutions
  • Intrinsically motivated and able to work proficiently both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills to meet tight deadlines
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • Knowledge of financial concepts and the securities industry is an asset
  • Understanding or familiarity with web development
  • French language skills are an asset
