The Opportunity

Responsibilities Include

Accurately interprets information from spoken English to American Sign Language (ASL) as well as ASL to spoken English rendering the source message exactly and faithfully as presented by all parties involved delivering the intent, meaning and register of the speaker at a level commensurate with the grade level of the student in support of a quality learning environment, meeting the linguistic needs, cultural dynamics and the spirit and content of the discourse
Facilitates communication between deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students and staff by providing interpreting services in and out of the classroom, adjusting to the signing, education and communication required.
May include scribing ASL to written English
Interprets in education situations such as classroom instruction, studenttostudent dialogue, counselling sessions, tutorials, assemblies, part/student meetings, field trips, etc
Under the direction of the classroom teacher, provides language extensions and vocabulary reinforcement to support academic concepts
Reviews educational material, vocabulary, concepts, sentence structure and plan for a variety of situations including nonclose captioned videos, field trips, assemblies, presentations, etc.

Education/Experience

Diploma from a recognized ASL/English Interpreter Training program
Current Certificate of Interpretation (COI)
13 years proficient interpreting experience, preferably in an educational setting
Current membership with one of Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Alberta (ASLIA)/Association of Visual Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC)/Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) or willingness to obtain
Previous work experience within a school division is considered an asset
An equivalent combination of Education and Experience may be considered
