Overview:


A Network Support Specialist is responsible for supporting the data network at the University of Waterloo, its underlying infrastructure and working with clients to resolve issues.

Each person participates in a wide range of activities to ensure a robust data network and a quality client experience.

People in this position should be familiar with working with network equipment command line interfaces and various vendor monitoring platforms.


Responsibilities:


  • Participating in the oncall rotation
  • Frequent configuration via CLI in the data center/distribution/core/access layers of the network (all routing and switching)
  • Reviewing of syslog's in CLI environments and vendor monitoring software platforms
  • Executing network 'move/add/change' work on the data center and core network equipment
  • Executing network 'move/add/change' requests for clients
  • Planning and executing projects to deploy new buildings or upgrade equipment (design/configuration/deployment)
  • Telecom Room maintenance (patching, consolidation, cleanup)
  • Participating in wireless deployments including wireless design, controller/ap configuration, network preparation, mounting of wireless access points, and surveying
  • Deploying and supporting network monitoring and management software
  • UPS maintenance (battery changing, configuring monitoring) and replacement
  • Creating, updating, and maintaining documentation
  • Configuring equipment following standard templates, updating templates appropriately
  • Install, replace, or remove routing, switching, wireless, IPAM equipment
  • Advanced level troubleshooting of wired and wireless network issues as reported by clients or monitoring software
  • Lead junior staff and coordinate with other teams on large projects
  • IP address management including host registrations, DHCP and DNS configurations
  • Managing and supporting network authentication and authorization servers
  • Completing job tasks assigned through the ticketing system
  • Proactively monitor for potential network issues and make recommendations for remediation and improvement
  • Review alerts in network monitoring software and resolve/escalate appropriately
  • Perform RMA of failed products
  • Create and modify scripts uses to perform configuration and monitoring tasks
  • Following university standards and best practices

Qualifications:

  • College/University degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • CCNA certificate or higher preferred
  • 5 or more years' experience in a network support role with at least 2 years in an advanced role
  • 5 or more years' experience with Cisco (or equivalent) switches and routers
  • Experience supporting a cisco ISE authentication server is advantageous
  • Experience supporting a solid server from efficient IP is advantageous
  • Experience participating in an oncall rotation
  • Experience managing network projects/migrations
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • Must be able to lift and carry (upto 50lbs), work at a desk, in a telecom room, and on a ladder
  • Must have a valid G driver's license
  • Knowledge of UW campus is an asset
  • Must be willing to undergo a Government of Canada Security Screening and be able to obtain a Reliability Status to access Protected B data.
