Purpose:


Ancillary Services provides a wide range of professionally managed campus services and amenities to enhance the student experience and support York University's mission, vision, and priorities.

The York University Bookstore (YUB) provides essential services to the University community by being an industry leader in the provision of learning materials.

YUB fosters campus engagement by offering a world-class collection of ethically sourced campus branded products, general interest books and other items.

The majority of students now prefer to purchase learning materials in a digital format and the upward trend towards digital is expected to continue.

YUB is a leader in the digital delivery of learning materials in Canada.

Reporting to the Director, Bookstore, Printing and Mailing Services, the Manager, Business Development and Purchasing role is responsible for the strategic and efficient procurement and management of inventory for the Bookstore.

The Bookstore is a revenue-generating and self-sustaining entity, and this role develops strategic plans and new initiatives to support development of the business to ensure expected revenue streams are maintained and optimally increased.

The role also manages textbook sales and merchandising for new and used books, rental programs and other related products and services, as publishing and use of content evolves in the higher educational sector.

The role manages a group of buyers who purchase textbooks and general books from publishers and a wide range of other products, including branded clothing and gifts, stationery, art supplies, and other items for resale.


Education:

Bachelors' degree in a relevant discipline, such as Business Administration.


Experience:

Five (5) years' experience in a retail environment, including managerial responsibilities and operations.
Two (2) years in the book industry or book retailing is required.
Several years of related experience working at a senior procurement level within the broader public sector.
3 years of management experience.
Supervision of staff in a unionized environment is preferred.

Experience in textbook publishing, distribution, and retailing, along with experience in logistics of the book industry, and specifically the educational sector is preferred.

Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
Effective skills in report writing.
Effective oral communication.
Ability to perform consistently, especially under pressure.
Demonstrated ability to complete business analysis.
Demonstrated ability to complete business related math.
Ability to set priorities. Effective problem resolution skills.
Introductory/basic computing skills including Word and Excel.


Additional Notes:

Normal working environment.
Flexibility is required with working hours, including afternoon, evening, overnight and weekend shifts.
Some travel between campuses and other satellite Bookstore locations may be required.

Compensation:


York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.

Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
