Job Summary

  • Dalhousie Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is the premier Maritime location for advanced study with over 3,500 graduate students in a researchintensive environment who can choose from over 95 Master's degrees and more than 45 Doctoral programs. Students learn with top professors in their fields; experts who are recognized across Canada and the world. Reporting to the Dean, the Human Resources and Office Administrator acts as a trusted advisor and first point of contact regarding human resources and administrative resources for the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides guidance and support to managers on a variety of employee relations matters, such as managing performance, behavior, sick leave and other attendance concerns. Liaises with central Human Resources contacts when necessary.
  • Serves as HR resource in the hiring process as required for NSGEU and DPMG positions, as well as coordinates thee search and selection process for senior leaders within FGS.
  • Responsible for the development, purchasing and management of inventory and maintaining offices for staff and facilitating set up of home offices.
  • Primary contact with Facilities Management for all operational and project work, liaises with contractors and ensures quality and timeline standards of the unit are met.
  • Supervises, plans workload, assesses, and monitors work quality and output of two clerical employees and three to four student assistants.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree with three to five years' experience with significant human resources and administrative responsibilities (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and project management skills
  • Strong leadership qualities and excellent decisionmaking skills.

Assets

  • Human resource management certificate or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a postsecondary or similar environment.
  • Experience supervising staff in a unionized environment.
