Position Summary:


Reporting to the Communications Officer (CO), the Communications Associate will support communications activities related to communications plans, produce communications materials including written and multimedia content, and implement new opportunities to maximize the mission and vision of the Faculty of Science, and of the McGill Sustainability Systems Initiative (MSSI).

Participates in the implementation of the communications strategy and creation of content to raise visibility and build awareness of the research, people, students, publications, events and initiatives of the Faculty and the MSSI.


Typical Functions:

  • Perform and organize activities to support the daily operations of the unit by ensuring that administrative services are carried out in accordance with established goals and objectives.
  • Research, write and edit short articles, biographies, press material, and bibliographies.
  • Verify facts to ensure accuracy of the information.
  • Edit and proofread documents in various stages of production.
  • Compile statistics and data for inclusion in reports. Update documents and reports, either in print or on the website.
  • Prepare and disseminate information concerning events through documentation, website, and posters.
  • Create a variety of multimedia products using specialized software and graphic programs.
  • Assist in the design of websites, maintain content and produce social media feeds (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube), while ensuring information is accurate and complete.

Additional Information - Primary Responsibilities:

  • Produces, sources, and disseminates McGill Science and MSSI-related content on topics such as sustainability, research news, student success stories and communications, staff achievements, activities, and events.
  • Creates, researches, edits, and formats content in various stages of production, including written and graphic design, for digital communications channels and professional print, including social media, newsletters, websites, formal reports, promotional material, and presentations and material for meetings.
  • Generates innovative ideas and rapidly produces creative content for McGill social media channels, with a strong emphasis on Instagram Reels.
  • Produces factsheets for non-specialist audiences that highlight sustainability systems research in a range of different disciplines.
  • Participates in the implementation of new initiatives that support, enhance and/or reflect key priorities.
  • Identifies needs and interests of external and internal stakeholders to inform decision-making about which stories to cover and how to cover them.
  • Periodically reviews and monitors Faculty and MSSI websites and subsidiary sites, and makes recommendations to optimize user experience and align sites with evolving digital standards.
  • Monitors internal and external news channels for McGill Science and MSSI-related coverage and, where appropriate, shares these stories through the appropriate communications channels.
  • Reviews analytics data to evaluate the success of various communication efforts.
  • Keeps current with best practices, top trends and new tools in the rapidly changing field of communications, design, multimedia and social media.
  • Performs other related tasks.


Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Knowledge of, or strong and active interest in, science and sustainability systems-related research.- Experience in a research environment is an asset.- Experience with providing support to student communications, a plus.- Experience in branding and raising brand awareness, a plus.- Creativity and ability to approach communications efforts from a variety of perspectives.- Exceptional attention to detail and consistent ability to prepare high-quality documents.- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.- Ability to establish priorities and short/long-term plans and objectives.- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and exceptional interpersonal skills.- Strong organizational skills; ability to assess and resolve problems- Experience in implementing communications plans and using analytics to assess the success of communications initiatives, a plus.- Experience in podcasting, a plus. Experience and skills with photography, video production, and basic graphic design a plus.- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.

The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 on a scale of 0-4.
